Synopsis

In 2012, about 50 million Americans are not food safe. This is about 1 in 6 of the total population, with the proportion of children facing food insecurity even higher by about 1 in 4. One in every two children receives federal food aid. The film sees directors Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush examining the problem of hunger in America, mostly through the story of three people who suffer from food insecurity:

  • Barbie, a Philadelphia mother who grew up in poverty and tried to give her two children a better life.
  • Rosie, a fifth-grader in Colorado who often has to rely on friends and neighbors to feed her and have trouble concentrating in school.
  • Tremonica, a second-grader of Mississippi whose asthma and health problems are exacerbated by the very empty calories his hardworking mother can work on.

Other Americans who are starving with hunger are also featured, including a policeman whose monthly salary leaves just enough money to buy food for two weeks, forcing him to use a food bank. A Place at the Table shows how hunger poses serious economic, social and cultural implications for the United States, and that the problem can be solved once and for all, if the American public decides - as they have in the past then - that makes healthy food available and affordable is in everyone's best interest.
