Airlines scrap bereavement fares even as they make record profits

In the United States and Canada, flight mourning is a flight purchased when a close relative has died or is dying. Trial tariffs are usually offered by many airlines, but by 2015, most stop providing them.

The deliberate flight often has flexible rules, and sometimes the rate is reduced, however, the tariff price depends on the airline. Customers may be able to earn a conditional tariff for a last-minute flight that is proportional to the previously purchased pre-order rate.

Until the late 1990s, it was common for an airline to ignore the 7 or 14 day advance payment rules for hate, but in recent years many airlines reduced the cost of death. Instead, many tourists are aware of it depending on the hidden city rates or other flight booking flights.

Multiple airline policies

The airlines have various policies related to mourning flights. This may include relatives who are eligible for such tickets, required evidence, and the price charged compared to other rates.

  • United Airlines no longer offers a loss rate, but still has more flexible options for changing and canceling flights. Previously, they offered a death rate of 5% of the ticket price in case of death or serious illness of family members or for individuals seeking medical care for tickets sold within six days of travel.
  • Delta Air Lines allow a discount for an imminent death or death for those who call in advance for a reservation.
  • Air Canada offers a loss rate in 7 days of funerals and to stay up to 30 days with a copy of death certificate, a letter from the funeral director, or a certificate from a treating doctor. For international travel only, the airline will also refund the difference between regular tariffs and grief victims if any of these are presented after the trip.
  • American Airlines no longer offers compassionate rates for customers traveling due to medical emergencies or deaths of family members after a merger with US Airways.
  • Alaska Airlines offers death rates for those traveling because of the death of a close family member. This rate is only available in seven days of travel.
  • JetBlue, Southwest, Frontier, and Virgin America do not offer a tariff for loss, but have more flexible options for changing and canceling tickets.

Other issues

Family members

Airline policies differ as to which family members are eligible for a mourning rate. Some airlines only accommodate close family members; others are more inclusive, offering rates for various family relationships, such as foster relatives, half kin, and step kin. The airline also explores whether same-sex couples, or domestic couples who are not legitimate partners, may be included.

Price

With reduced availability of mortality rates, it has been suggested that cheaper rates can often be found online.
