A Advanced Study Certificate (CAS), also called "Advanced Certificate" (AC), Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies (CAGS), or Certificate of Advanced Professional Studies (CAPS), is a post-Teacher academic certificate designed for non-traditional students of liberal arts, and practitioners seeking continuing education programs to enhance their professional development in areas such as education and library science. Some CAGS connect to existing doctoral programs such as PhD in Organizational Leadership: for example, PhD students receive CAGS in Leadership Studies after completing their 2 year doctoral degree at the University of the East.
The Liberal Art Certificate of advanced postgraduate study is offered by several institutions offering master's degrees in interdisciplinary liberal arts. This certificate program is designed to hone the critical thinking skills and personal knowledge of the chosen field, in addition to encouraging professional development. They typically require 30 hours of postgraduate study beyond a master's degree.
For some disciplines, this certificate requires a three-year post-graduate program equivalent to a Specialist degree. For example, School Psychologists must obtain an MA/AC or CAS (Master plus Advanced Certification) or an EdS degree to practice in a school setting or be eligible for national certification. These are all specialist degree degrees because of the 1200 hours required internship experience and 60 more hours of graduate studies.
Library and information science The CAS program is intended to enable students to focus on specific sub-fields of libraries and information science after earning a master's degree in discipline. Some students advance directly to CAS after completing their master's degree, others return for CAS after working in the field. Certificates typically take one to two years to complete, including a cumulative exam or a major project that culminates. Such programs are offered by many, but not all, of the US higher education institutions that issue the masters degree of the American Accreditation Association.
