A drawer, also called (especially in English North America) bureau , is a type of cabinet that has several parallel drawers, usually stacked one on top of the other.

In American, cabinets are furnishings, usually waist-deep, that have drawers and usually room for mirrors. In the UK, Welsh cabinets or cabinets have shelves at the top for storing or displaying cutlery.

Chests of drawers have traditionally been made and used for storing clothing, especially underwear, socks, and other items that are not normally hung or stored in cabinets. They are usually placed in the bedroom for this purpose, but can actually be used to store anything that will fit inside and can be placed anywhere in the home or elsewhere. Various personal items are also often stored in the drawer. It has a long history as one of the stand-bys of the carpenter's workshop. The typical chest is rectangular in its entirety and often has short legs in the lower corners for placement on the floor.

The chests of drawers often come in 5-, 6-, and 7-drawer varieties, with single or double drawers. The chest depicted on the right will be described as '5 more than 2 chest-in-chest', the last term derived from the fact that at one time it will be made up as 2 segregated sections. They are generally made of wood, similar to many other types of furniture, but of course can be made from other materials. The inside of the drawer can be accessed by pulling it out on the front. These are often placed so that the rear side faces the wall because access to the back is not required. The lateral side is also usually made in such a way that they can be placed on the wall or in the corner. Although they can be plain in appearance, the chests of drawers can also be made with fancy appearance or ornaments, including the finishing touches and various external colors. Traditionally, the drawers will slide out on the fine wooden rails. Most modern cabinets (such as filing cabinets) use roll-out shelf sliders, made of metal, with rollers.

Most chests of drawers fall into one of two types: the height around the waist or the height of the bench and those (usually with more drawers) that are shoulder-level. Both types usually have a flat surface on top. The waist-high crates often have vertically placed mirrors on top, often purchased with pieces. When a user dresses or prepares their clothes, he can see themselves in the mirror to check their appearance.

A chifforobe (from chiffo nier ward ) is a combination of cabinets and drawers.

History

In late medieval Europe, chest began to be widely used, especially in the noble houses. This type, also known as wooden chests is more or less a simple wooden box tied to a hinged cover. Maybe or maybe not standing on your feet. The initial transition phase is the installation of a drawer under this main compartment. A number of early fragments from the seventeenth century still exist from the manufacture of English oak, and the corresponding seventeenth-century French walnut has survived. Some of the earliest surviving specimens of early English originated from the Charles I period. Nutting attributes the earliest parts of Treasury Furniture to "before 1649".

Mule's Chest: Chest is generally wider than tall and deep. The mule had a drawer on its base and a hinged top, beneath which there were two short drawers or a long drawer. This form, introduced in England in 1600, was popular for 100 years in British and colonial America.

Contemporary shape

Chest of drawers continues to be a popular item for contemporary designers. An important form was designed by Dutch designer Tejo Remy in 1991. The drawer drawer "You Can not Lay Down Your Memories" was built from 20 used drawers sourced from a local flea market in Europe tied with lace rope. This method means no two same production. Museum of Modern Art acquires one of the earliest made.
