Continuing education (similar to advanced education in the UK and Ireland) is a term that covers all in the broad list of post-secondary learning activities and programs. This term is used primarily in the United States and Canada.
The forms of recognized post-secondary learning activities in the domain include: degree programs by non-traditional students, non-degree career training, employment training, and formal personal enrichment courses (both on campus and online).
Continuing education in general is similar to adult education, at least intended for adult learners, especially those outside the traditional university campus or university.
Often, in the United States and Canada continuing education programs are delivered through a continuing education division or school from a known college or university sometimes as a extension of the university or extension school . The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development argues, however, that continuing education should be "fully integrated into institutional life rather than often regarded as separate and differentiated operations employing different staff 'if it is to feed into the main program and remembering appropriate recognition provided by this type of provision ".
Georgetown University, Michigan State University and the University of Denver have benefited from non-credit programs related to strengthening partnerships with companies and government agencies, helping to inform and form curricula for degree programs, and generate revenue to support academic companies.

History
The Chautauqua Institution, originally the Chautauqua Lake School Sunday, was founded in 1874 "as an out-of-school educational experiment, vacation learning. It was successful and expanded almost immediately after the course for Sunday school teachers to include academic subjects, music, arts and physical education. "
Cornell University is one of the higher education institutions that began offering university-based continuous education, especially for teachers, through extension programs in the 1870s. As noted in the Cornell Era Cornell Feb. 16, 1877, the university offers the program "Great Lakes Tour" for "teachers and others" under the direction of Professor Theodore B. Comstock, Cornell's head of geology majors.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison started a continuing education program in 1907. The New School for Social Research, founded in 1919, was originally devoted to adult education. In 1969, Empire State College, a unit of the State University of New York, was the first institution in the US to focus exclusively on providing higher education for adult learners. In 1976, the University of Florida created the Advanced Education Division and most courses are offered in the evenings or weekends to accommodate the schedules of working students.

For professional
In the domain of continuing education, professional continuing education is a special learning activity generally characterized by the issuance of a certificate or continuing education unit (CEU) for the purpose of documenting attendance at a designated seminar or course. Licensing agencies in a number of areas (such as teaching and health care) impose continuing education requirements on licensed members to continue to practice certain professions. This requirement is intended to encourage professionals to expand their knowledge base and keep abreast of new developments.
Depending on the field, these requirements can be met through a college or university course, extension courses or conferences and attendance seminars. Although the individual profession may have different standards, the most widely accepted standard, developed by the International Association for Continuing Education & Training, whether ten hours of contact is the same as one Continuing Education Unit. Not all professionals use the CEU convention. For example, the American Psychological Association accredits sponsors to continue education and only uses the CE approach. Unlike the CEU, CE credits are usually one CE credits for each contact clock.
In the spring of 2009, Eduventures, a high-education consulting firm, released research results that illustrate that the recession has made a significant impact on the views of prospective continuing education students. A survey of 1,500 adults planning to enroll in a course or program within the next two years determined that while nearly half of respondents believe that the value of education has increased due to the recession, more than two-thirds said the economic situation has affected their plans for continuing education.
Methods and formats
Continuing education delivery methods may include traditional class lecture and laboratory types. However, many continuing education programs use distance education, which includes not only independent studies, but may also include video material, broadcast programming or online education that recently dominate the distance learning community.
