DHL Express is a division of the German logistics company Deutsche Post DHL that provides international courier services, parcels and express mail. Deutsche Post DHL is the largest logistics company in the world operating worldwide, especially in sea and airmail.
Founded in the United States in 1969 to send documents between San Francisco and Honolulu, the company expanded its services worldwide in the late 1970s. The company is primarily interested in offshore and intercontinental shipments, but the success of FedEx boosted their intra-US expansion starting in 1983.
In 1998, Deutsche Post began acquiring shares in DHL. It achieved interest control in 2001, and acquired all of the outstanding shares in December 2002. The company then absorbed DHL into the Express division, while expanding the use of DHL brands to other Deutsche Post divisions, business units, and subsidiaries. Today, DHL Express shares its DHL brand with business units such as DHL Global Forwarding and DHL Supply Chain.
DHL Express's financial results are published in Deutsche Post AG's annual report. In 2016, revenue of this division increased 2.7 percent to EUR14 billion. Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) increased by 11.3% compared to 2015 to EUR1.5 billion.

Origins
While Larry Hillblom was studying law at the University of California, Berkeley's Boalt Hall School of Law in the late 1960s, he accepted a job as a courier for Michael's insurance company, Poe & Associates (MPA). He began his courier service between Oakland International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport, took the package for the last flight of the day, and returned on the first flight the next morning, up to five times a week.
After he graduated, Hillblom met with MPA salesman Adrian Dalsey and they plan to expand the MPA concept of fast delivery to other business firms. They fly between Honolulu and Los Angeles, carrying bill of lading for their first client, Seatrain Lines.
Initial
Hillblom set aside some of his student loans to start the company, bringing his two friends, Adrian Dalsey and Robert Lynn as partners, with the initial initials of their family name as the company name (DHL). They shared a Plymouth Duster they drove around San Francisco to retrieve the documents in suitcases, then rushed to the airport to book a flight using another relatively new invention, a corporate credit card. When business started, they started hiring new courier to join the company. Their first employees were Max and Blanche Kroll, whose apartments in Hawaii often became temporary dwellings for their couriers.
Domestic expansion
In the 1970s, DHL was an international shipping company, and the only one offering overnight services. The only major competitor in the overnight market is Federal Express (FedEx), which did not open its first international service until 1981, expanding into Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Nevertheless, the domestic market is very profitable, and DHL is the third largest courier behind FedEx and UPS.
Purchase Deutsche Post
Deutsche Post began acquiring shares in DHL in 1998, acquiring control of interest in 2001. By the end of 2002, Deutsche Post had acquired all of DHL's remaining stock, and absorbed operations into the Express division. The DHL brand is extended to other Deutsche Post divisions, business units and subsidiaries. Today, DHL Express shares the DHL brand with other Deutsche Post business units, such as DHL Global Forwarding, DHL Freight, DHL Supply Chain, and DHL Global Mail.
DHL Express global headquarters is part of the Deutsche Post headquarters in Bonn.
The headquarters for America is located in Plantation, Florida, USA, while the Asia-Pacific headquarters and emerging markets are located in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and China. The European Hub is in Leipzig, Germany.
Most DHL Express businesses are incorporated as DHL International GmbH.
Major competitors include FedEx, UPS, and national post carriers such as the United States Postal Service (USPS) and Royal Mail. However, DHL has a small partnership with USPS, which allows DHL to deliver small packets to recipients via the USPS network known as DHL Global Mail, now known as DHL eCommerce. It is also the sole provider for transferring USPS mail in and out of Iraq and Afghanistan.
DHL offers services around the world, including shipments to countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan and Myanmar (formerly Burma). Due to German property, DHL is not affected by US embargoes or sanctions and will be shipped to Cuba and North Korea. However, there are strict rules to send to North Korea, because the country has a weak relationship with the West.
Since DHL is no longer a US company, it is not allowed to make domestic flights between US airports. DHL contracts this service to other providers.

Environmental recordings
DHL has taken steps to control their environmental effects by using alternative fuel vehicles. DHL converts vehicles within a particular shipping fleet to use alternative fuels. Certain new vehicles use compressed natural gas, where DHL hopes to convert 50% of their vehicles in the future.
On September 16, 2005, DHL won the Court of Appeal which set an exception zone around 288 buildings in the UK as well as the home of its 18,000 British employees. Companies have been the subject of intimidation campaigns because of their business with Huntingdon Life Sciences. The judge prohibited protesters from coming within 50 meters (46 m) of each DHL building or home of their employees and organized demonstrations within 100 meters (91 m) unless police had been given a four-hour notice. The order also protects anyone who does business with DHL from intimidation.
Use of electric vehicles
In December 2014, Deutsche Post DHL bought the company StreetScooter, a small manufacturer of electric vehicles as part of its long-term goal of achieving zero emissions in its shipping operations. By the end of 2016, about 2,000 vehicles have been produced.
In the future, electric vans with much greater reach will be needed to achieve the long-term goal of replacing all Deutsche Post and DHL Express fleets of approximately 70,000 vehicles with the StreetScooter model.
The GoGreen Deutsche Post/DHL program plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and local air pollutants; the company has four interim goals to do so, to be achieved by 2025. The long-term goal, which is compiled by Frank Appel, Chief Executive Officer, is more aggressive. "From now until 2050, our mission is to push our business toward zero emissions [logistics-related]." We set standards for the future of the transportation sector and do our part to help the world community achieve its goal of limiting global warming to less than two degrees Celsius. "

Deutsche Post has five airline subsidiaries operating for DHL Express, operating 96 aircraft and 21 other aircraft on order, collectively referred to as DHL Flight. DHL Express is an equivalent partner in the sixth carrier operating for DHL Express:

- SNAS/DHL , Bahrain provides services for Middle East destinations from Bahrain International Airport
Sponsors
For several years, DHL was the main sponsor of the Porsche Spyder Le Mans Prototype at the International Motor Sport Association, American Le Mans Series. DHL also sponsors Ryan Hunter-Reay # 28 IndyCar Series car for Andretti Autosport since 2011. With DHL, Hunter-Reay won the championship for the 2012 IndyCar Series season as well as 2014 Indianapolis 500. DHL was the main sponsor of the Jordanian Formula One Team during 2002. Since that, DHL has been a regular track sponsor in various races throughout the year, as well as being an 'Official Logistics Partner' of the sport. Since 2007, they have also sponsored the DHL Fastest Lap Award for drivers who reach the fastest laps in a single season.
Manchester United Football Club announced them as their first training sponsor in August 2011, approving a four-year deal with DHL reportedly worth £ 40 million; it is believed to be the first example of a sponsorship training kit in English football. In 2014, FC Bayern Munich approved a six-year sponsorship deal with DHL. In 2012, the company becomes the main sponsor of the Irish League club Bohemian F.C.
DHL is the current title sponsor for the Western Cape Rugby Union team of South Africa, the Western Province and the Stormers. It entered into force on 1 January 2011 for a period of three years. DHL is still the current sponsor for both teams in the 2017/18 season.
For 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race DHL is one of four race partners who provide logistics for this event.
In 2014, the company sponsors, with IMG Fashion, DHL Exported , aimed at "helping locally successful designers to gain international momentum". DHL Exported will "sponsor designers selected for two consecutive seasons at" Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York, London Fashion Week, Milan Fashion Week or Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tokyo. Extending its support to various cultural endeavors, DHL signed as an Official Logistics partner for Cirque du Soleil. DHL carries up to 2,000 tonnes and 80 shipping containers using air, sea and land to transport equipment from one city to the next.
In 2015 DHL becomes the main sponsor of the Italian volleyball club Modena Volley, which includes the all-Italian SuperLega championship and Champions League CEV.
DHL is the main sponsor of Surf Life Saving Australia.
