In computer and video games, a docking station or port replicator or dock provides a simplified "plugging-in" way of electronic devices like video game consoles hybrids like tablets, Nintendo Switches and laptop computers to the general peripherals. Because devices that can be documented - from cell phones to wireless mice - have different connectors, power signals and usage, the docks are not standardized and are therefore often designed with special models and devices.

The dock may allow some laptop computers to become a replacement for desktop computers, without sacrificing the functionality of the mobile computer from the machine. Portable computers can be anchored and withstand heat, cold or standby, depending on system capabilities. In the cold dock or undock, someone actually shut down the computer before doing docking/undocking. On the hot dock or undock, the computer still runs when anchored/not installed. Standby docking or undocking, the intermediate style used in some designs, allows the computer to be docked/undocked while it is turned on, but requires it to be placed in sleep mode before docking/undocking.

Docking stations can be broadly divided into four basic varieties.

Port replicator

Port replicators (also called passthroughs) are functionally and logically identical to the extension cable bundles, except that they are plugged and released together via the docking port. Some also include an electric adapter to change from one pinout to another (for example, Micro-DVI to a normal DVI connector.)

Breakout dock

The concept breakout dock is a breakout box in the form of a dock. This is an extension to a typical port replicator because it not only replicates the ports that already exist on the computer, but also offers additional ports. Modern computers most often do this by using special, often proprietary, connectors that combine signals from many hidden traces of onboard external buses into a single connector. Thus, the dock can offer more ports than is physically present on the computer. This allows the base unit to have fewer physical ports while still allowing the user to access the full features of the motherboard.

Most companies that produce laptops with such breakout ports also offer a simpler adapter that gives access to one or two buses consolidated in them at a time.

Docking Port by Eden

Similar to breakout devices, some docking stations generate multiple connections from one port, just instead of extracting them from the internal chipset, they make it inside the dock using a converter. They are functionally identical to hubs with various converters attached. Typically USB-based or Thunderbolt, they incorporate a variety of converters such as a full-screen USB or external GPU adapter, audio chipset, NIC, storage cage, modem and memory card reader and even PCI Express card slots connected through an internal USB hub or PCI Express bridge to provide computer access host to an extra connection not previously owned. A simpler "docking station" consists of nothing more than a hub in the stand.

Because they tend to use non-proprietary connections, the converter dock is usually vendor neutral and supplied by a third party.

Computer stands

Computer booths are sometimes also called docking stations, even though they are not connected to a computer in any way. They are an inert accessory designed only to physically support a computer placed on it, usually to raise the screen to a more ergonomic height, provide cooling, or just to save desk space.

The Nintendo Switch is a hybrid video game console like a tablet that has a docking station where the main switch unit can be placed for charging, or to be played on television.

Mobile docking stations

Mobile docking stations, also referred to as vehicle mounts , provide a stable platform for the operation of notebooks, laptops, and tablets in vehicles. Many industries have adopted mobile computing and therefore operators want to have their fully-equipped vehicles as mobile office offices, commonly referred to as mobile offices . In 2015, organizations use mobile docking stations in various sectors such as (law enforcement, electricity, telecommunications, military, emergency medical services, fire, construction, insurance, real estate, agriculture, oil, gas, transportation, warehousing, distribution food, surveys, and landscaping.

Some manufacturers design special mobile docking stations to withstand the rigors of travel; such products may have MIL-STD 810E construction specifications for vibration and impact.

Mobile docking stations usually come mated to armatures, laptop desks or standard shelves to provide the ability to position the computer in a vehicle in a safe and ergonomic position. As with all docking stations, mobile docking stations will provide users with the means to quickly and easily dock and not dock the computer. In addition, some mobile docking stations provide a security key to prevent theft.

Mobile docking station type

  • Car Cradle is designed for use with most popular cars.
  • Truck Mounts are designed for use with most popular pickup trucks, vans, SUVs, and heavy duty trucks.
  • Carriage Stand and The Forklift Stand are designed to install laptops, laptops & amp; tablet computers in forklifts and warehouse carts.

Vehicle installation components

The basic components in the design of vehicle vehicle mounts include:

  • Docking station: The actual station or cradle where the mobile PC is located. These stations may be equipped with additional functions, such as charging and USB ports.
  • Motion attachment: The moving component of the mounting system is attached between the pole or the tube and the base of the stand. These come in a number of varieties, allowing users to configure their motion mount range to the desired specifications.
  • Setup base: Install the mounting system to the vehicle. This element generally consists of rough materials such as steel. Tunnel Mounts attach to the elevated floor area (drive shaft tunnel) between the driver and the passenger. Passenger Side Mounts clings to the floor on the passenger side of the vehicle. The parenthesis console attaches to the center console of the existing vehicle. Garbage Cradle provides installation options for use in your car suitcase.
  • Poles and tubes: Attachments that allow the user to customize the length and settings of a particular installation for a particular vehicle style.

The docking system is sent in their respective components, which requires the user to install and configure the device.
