Hockey East Association , also known as Hockey East , is a fully operational campus ice hockey conference in New England. It participates in the NCAA Division I as a hockey-only conference.
The Eastern Hockey appeared in 1984 for male hockey when most of its members are currently separated from what is now known as the Hockey ECAC. This largely sought to emulate the Great Eastern Conference, which had grown rapidly since its creation several years earlier. The women's league, WHEA, began playing in 2002.
On October 5, 2011, the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish (ACC members outside of football) announced that they will join the Eastern Hockey as the first non-New England school in 2013 after the CCHA is folded. On March 22, 2016, Notre Dame later announced their men's hockey team would leave Hockey East for the Big Ten Conference early in the 2017-2018 season. The University of Connecticut (UConn) and Hockey East jointly announced on June 21, 2012 that the UConn men's team, then at Atlantic Hockey, will join the women's school team at Hockey East in 2014. On October 24, 2013, Merrimack College, member of the Hockey East men's league, announced that they will upgrade the women's team from club level to full effective university status by 2015 and join Hockey East's women's league.
On May 2, 2017, the College of the Holy Cross announced that they would join the Eastern Hockey for women's hockey which began in 2018-19.

Men
The Hockey East Championship Game has been held in Boston since 1987, first in Boston Garden and now TD Garden, since 1996. The first two were held in Providence, Rhode Island at the Providence Civic Center (now Dunkin 'Donuts Center).
The last match and the semi-finals are held on consecutive nights in mid-March in the Park. The quarter-finals took place the previous week. The top eight teams in the league advance to the quarter-finals: the quarter-finals series are a 2-out-of-3 series with all the matches played in the championship. There are two cases where the # 8 win wins on the # 1 team ice.
Female
The Hockey East Championships were held in Boston from early 2003 to 2007. The event was held at Northeastern's Matthews Arena in 2003 and 2004 before moving to BU's Walter Brown Arena in 2005. The tournament returned to Matthews Arena in 2006, held at Whittemore Center UNH in 2007, and at UConn's Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum in 2008. The tournament returned to UNH in 2009, Providence in 2010, and the last campus to host was Boston University in 2011. The tournament moved to Hyannis, Massachusetts in 2012, and Lawler Arena at the Merrimack College campus in North Andover, Massachusetts in 2016.
Rivalry
Boston College, Boston University and Northeastern all take part in the annual Beanpot tournament with Harvard of ECAC Hockey.
The fierce competition that previously existed between Boston College and Notre Dame, Holy War on Ice, became a conference meeting with the arrival of Notre Dame at Hockey East. Both rivals in other sports as well, as both are members of the Atlantic Coast Conference for most sports (although Notre Dame football teams remain independent, they play BC in the sport on a regular basis). Maine also has great competition with New Hampshire, often called "The Border War". Providence and UConn also have great competition spilled from the basketball court.

Men
At the end of each regular season, the coach schedule of each team of Hockey East chooses which players they choose to be in the three All-Conference teams: first team, second team and rookie team (except for 1985-86 when no rookie team is selected). In addition they choose to provide up to 6 individual trophies to qualified players at the same time. Hockey East also awarded the Most Valuable Player Conference Tournament and named the all-star tournament team, selected at the end of the conference tournament. Four of these awards have been awarded annually that Hockey East has operated. In addition, Scoring Champion and Goaltending Champions are named only based on player statistics made during the season.
Female Woman
The award for the top HEA players each year is the Cammy Granato Award, awarded since 2009. The NCAA I Hockey Division I, Patty Kazmaier Award, has been won by HEA Brooke Whitney (Northeastern) in 2002, Alexandra Carpenter (Boston College ) by 2015, and Kendall Coyne (Northeastern) in 2016.

The Hockey East game airs locally on NESN and nationally on NBCSN.
