The Company, legally known as R.R. Donnelley & amp; Sons Company, founded in 1864 by Richard Robert Donnelley. His son, Reuben H. Donnelley, founded another unrelated company R. H. Donnelley.
The Donnelley RR cartographic production facility in Lancaster, Pennsylvania grew to become one of the largest custom mapping companies in the United States. In the early 1990s, the division successfully integrated the routing technology with its digital map database and launched a separate company, Geosystems, which a few years later became MapQuest.

Acquisitions and business mergers
Throughout its history, especially in the 1990s and 2000s, RR Donnelley bought a number of other companies openly, steadily increasing in size. In February 2004, RR Donnelley joined Moore Wallace Inc., keeping the name of RR Donnelley as the name of the combined company. Donnelley subsequently purchased OfficeTiger, a major publisher and financial outsourcing company, and a printing company Banta Corporation in 2007. In May 2007, RR Donnelley also obtained books and educational materials from Von Hoffmann (and the creative/pre-press Anthology Inc.) subsidiary of Visant Corporation. Additional purchases in early 2007 were Perry Judd's Holdings Inc., a personal catalog and magazine printers. In early 2008, RRD also announced the acquisition of Pro Line Printing, Inc. In 2007, RR Donnelley was the largest commercial printer in the world.
In 2005, the company acquired Asia Printers Group from CVC Capital Partners in Hong Kong. Asia Printers Group consists of South China Printing, which was acquired by Asia Printers Group in 2002.
In 2006 the company acquired the financial printing business of the Canadian Bank Note Company, which consists of documentation for an initial public offering.
In 2007, RR Donnelley was also named as an interested party in an effort to buy Quebecor World. In May 2009, the company made an unsolicited bid to purchase Quebecor World.
In July 2008, the company made a multi-year contract with F W Publications Inc., which will allow Donnelley to print a large number of F Book and magazine publications. The contract is worth about $ 80 million.
In 2010 and 2011, RR Donnelley acquired Bowne & amp; Co., Nimblefish Technologies based in San Francisco, Helium.com, and LibreDigital based in Austin.
During the Labor Day weekend in September 2011, RR Donnelly announced it was closing the Bloomsburg printing plant, where the Penguin Classics and novels in the Twilight and Idiot's Guide series were printed.
On August 15, 2012, RR Donnelley acquired EDGAR Online.
In 2013, RR Donnelly bought Consolidated Graphics.
In August 2015, the company announced it would spin off into three different companies. One will keep the RR name Donnelley & amp; Children while the other two will be titled LSC Communications and Donnelley Financial Solutions. This round is completed in October 2016.
Lakeside Classics
The Lakeside Classics is a series of books printed each year, at Christmas time, by RR Donnelley. This tradition began in 1903 by Thomas E. Donnelley, who at the time was president of the company. The basic format of these books remains essentially the same from the beginning, as hardcover, wrapped cloth and gold embossed. Subjects tend to include elements of American history. Many of the earliest volumes contain American speeches and writings, including Benjamin Franklin, whose autobiography was published as the first Lakeside Classic.
Lakeside Classics is not sold to the public and is available only to RR Donnelley employees, clients and other people associated with the company. A week before Christmas, every employee was given a copy of that year's volume. Thus, some volumes become scarce, and demanded the market of collectors. Antique book stores often have sections devoted to Lakeside Classics, and the initial volume ordered large quantities of book collectors.
