"The Only Way Is Up " is a song written by George Jackson and Johnny Henderson and originally released in 1980 as a single by soul singer Otis Clay. In 1988, it became a chart-topping single for Yazz and Plastic Populations. This song is the official theme song for the award-winning ITV2 series The Only Way is Essex . This song is a favorite of M People's, who often play it on their live tour. The band's lead singer, Heather Small, described it as her favorite song, and after explaining that, if she's anywhere, it's the song she's going to sing.

Yazz Version

The Yazz version was produced by Jonathan More and Matt Black (better known as the Coldcut dance duo, who had worked with Yazz on their hit single "Doctorin 'the House"). Released as a single in July 1988, "The Only Way Is Up" became an instant success, spending five weeks at number one in the United Kingdom, and eventually became the second best selling single of the year. In the United States, however, it fared poorly, peaking at number 96 on Billboard Hot 100, although it reached number two on the Billboard dance chart.

The opening cover version cover is an example of Sharon Redd's 1982 classic "Beat the Street".

Remix 2009 was released in the UK on September 7, 2009.

Background and release

After leaving school, Yazz got a job at a nightclub in Soho and went into his first band called The Biz. He then meets the British music duo manager Wham! who is the manager. She took singing lessons and made a demo song that was introduced to Coldcut's electronic music duo. Together, they write "Doctorin 'the House" which combines samples from various sources, especially TV and movie dialogue. It reached number six on the UK Singles Chart in March 1988 and was very popular in clubs. Their second single, the pump house version of "The Only Way Is Up" was released in July 1988 and became a big hit on clubs and on the charts. It spent five weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart and became the second best selling single of the year. "The Only Way Is Up" also reached number one on the charts in Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Sweden.
