History

Visiting cards becomes an indispensable etiquette tool, with sophisticated rules governing their use. An important convention is that the first person will not expect to see a second person in his own second house (unless invited or introduced) without first leaving his visiting card in the second house. After leaving the card, the first will not be accepted at first, but may receive the card in his own home in response to the second. This will serve as a signal that personal visits and home meetings will be welcomed. On the other hand, if no cards are coming, or if the card is sent in envelopes, personal visits are thus discouraged.

As the adoption of France, they were called une carte d'adresse from 1615 to 1800, and later became carte de visite or visiteur with the advent of photography on mid-19th century. Visiting cards became common among European aristocracies, as well as in the United States. The whole procedure depends on a servant to open the door and accept the cards and, therefore, is limited to the social classes employing the servants.

If the card is left with a turning angle, it indicates that the card is left alone rather than by a waiter.

The next day Paul found the Stubbs card on his desk, the bend appeared. Paul went to Hertford to call Stubbs, but found him. He left the card, the bend appeared.

Some visit cards include delicate ornate decorations, embossed letters, and fantastic symbols. However, the standard form of visit cards in the 19th century in England was a regular card with nothing more than the bearer's name on it. Sometimes a gentlemen's club name can be added, but the address is not included. Visit cards are stored in a highly decorated cardboard box.

Visiting cards are no longer the upper and upper middle-class universal features that once existed in Europe and North America. Much more common is business cards, where contact details, including address and phone number, are very important. This led to the entry of such details even on modern domestic visiting cards: New Debrett Ethics in 2007 supported the inclusion of personal and club addresses (in the lower left and right respectively) but stated the entry of a telephone or fax number is "solecism".

According to Debrett's Handbook by 2016, a man's card will traditionally award a title, rank, personal address or service (bottom left) and club (lower right) in addition to his name. Peer titles are given without prefix (eg only "Duke of Wellington"), the same honors are given as "Lord John Smith", etc., but "Hon" (for "The Honorable") are not used (Mr, Ms, etc. used instead ). Those without a noble title or honorary degree may use an ecclesiastical degree, military rank, "Professor" or "Dr", or Master, Ms., etc. For the archbishop, bishop, dean and archdeakon, a territorial title is used (eg "The Bishop of London"). Men can use their first name or initials, while a married woman or widower can use her husband's name (traditional use) or herself. The only post-nominal letters used are those that show membership of the armed forces (eg "Captain J. Smith, RN"). The Social Card , which is a modern version of visiting cards, displays the person's name, mobile number, and email address, with optional residential addresses rarely included; family social cards including names of parents and children.
