The Maritime and Science Academy of Sciences , commonly referred to as the MAST Academy , or MAST , is a public high school in Miami, Florida, in Virginia Key. MAST Academy is a magnetic school under the reign of Miami-Dade County Public Schools. The principal is Josephine Otero, designated in 2013. US News & amp; World Report places MAST as the 42nd best high school in the country by 2015.
Academic focus of MAST Academy especially marine studies. Students choose one of three major areas of study where the US public high school curriculum is infused with maritime related subjects. These areas are the Marine and Atmospheric Science (OAS), Maritime and Cultural Studies (MSC), and the Related Oceanic Industry (MRI). Specific courses offered include Marine Science, Oceanography, Solar Energy, Environmental Science, Pools and Water Security.
MAST Academy is located in Virginia Key, a barrier island between Miami and Key Biscayne, across the street from the Miami Seaquarium and within walking distance of Miami Rosenstiel University Oceanography and Atmospheric School.

In 1990, MAST Academy was founded in Key Biscayne.
In 2012, the school announces it will expand 1,700 seats, with preferences granted to qualified Key Biscayne residents. It is controversial and deeply debated whether the villagers of Key Biscayne should be opened to all Key Biscayne high school students. A former student reportedly claimed, "I do not believe they will hand that school over to the wealthy Key Biscayne people in exchange for $ 9 million," adding, "it would really destroy what that MAST is."
In April 2015, the threat of school shootings was submitted to the MAST Academy, as records found the reading, "On April 17, 2015 I will go to this school and shoot everyone I see." Some students decide to go to school on the day of shooting should be. In an interview with NBC 6 South Florida, a student claimed the reason for coming, "I just love learning so I like going to class, and I'm not scared." Miami-Dade County Public School Inspector Alberto M. Carvalho later tweeted, "I'm always impressed by the calmness of our students 'body.I'm not scared.I'm here to study.'"
The MAST Academy is now a secondary school of grades 6-12. The tour is available on Tuesday during the academic year and is given by their leadership students. No registration required.
Franchise
Because of the reputation of the school, the Miami-Dade County Public School begins "franchising" MAST. In 2010, MAST Medical @ Homestead was founded. In 2011, JosÃÆ'Â © MartÃÆ' Middle School introduced its magnet program with high school expansion in 2011, before actually re-establishing itself as Academy JosÃÆ'Â Â © MartÃÆ'MAST 6-12 in 2013. Awards and acknowledgments
During the school years 1994-96 and 2006-07, the MAST Academy was recognized with the Blue Ribbon School Award of Excellence by the United States Department of Education, the highest award acceptable to American schools.
MAST Academy is one of six national finalists in the 2010 White House "Challenges of Preparation." People from across the nation have chosen to decide which schools will host President Barack Obama as lay speakers.
MAST has established a tradition of academic excellence, and has been ranked among the Newsweek '100 Top High School several times. It has been listed as one of the "Best Miami-Dade Schools", and, by 2014, is ranked 10th in Florida.

Demographics
Schools have enrollment of 1420 high school students. Student's ethnic breakdown is 60% Hispanic, 23% White, 10% Black, 5% Asian, and 2% unknown.
Extracurricular activities
The main sports school is water polo and swimming. The school also offers men's basketball teams, boys 'and girls' soccer teams, and women's volleyball teams. In 2013-2014, he has a tennis team for boys and girls.
MAST is active in the National Ocean Sciences Bowl Competition, where he was placed first in the region and the fifth place in the country in 2006. The Black History Brain Bowl team won the 2006 Regional Championship.
MAST is home to the first JROTC Coast Guard unit in the country.
School mascot is a mako shark named Isurus, after a pelican retired named Pete.
Robotics and engineering team, MAST Academy Mecha Makos, founded in 2006, has competed in many competitions including Youth Fair, MATE, FIRST, and FIU Wall of Wind competitions. The Mecha Makos qualify for the VEX World Championships in the 2011, 2012 and 2013 academic year.
Publications
The Beacon , the MAST-run student newspaper, and the yearbook, Mako Fuka , has received a gold medal from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
