Franco was born in Johnston, Rhode Island. After he saw magic on TV when he was four years old, he begged his parents to give him a magic set. He then starts doing tricks in his kindergarten class. One of his greatest influences and his first assistant was his grandmother, who used to read magic instructions to Mat when he was too young to read for himself. One of Mat's favorite memories is when he and his grandmother are trying to figure out how to make cards come out of thin air, like a magician they see on television. They hung black curtains in the living room and cut holes in them. Grandma Mat hides on the other side and gives the cards through the curtains to Mat while her grandfather watches, playing along with "the grandmother must step out for a bit" and that she does not know how the cards appear.
Franco continues to study magic as a child and do everything he possibly can. When he was 12 years old, he had saved enough money from a local show to fly to Las Vegas to study the performing arts with some of his idols, including Jeff McBride.
Franco graduated from Johnston High School in 2006 and became captain of his senior year wrestling team. He will continue studying at the University of Rhode Island, receiving a degree in Business Administration with a minor in Communication Studies.
