The road signs in Norway are regulated by the Norwegian Road Agency, Statens vegvesen .

The signs follow a common European convention about the use of shapes and colors to indicate function. Any text included on additional signs will usually be in Norwegian, but in some cases may be bilingual. In northern Norway, city and informative signs can be printed in Norwegian and Sami. In areas close to the Russian border, signs can be written in both Latin and Cyrillic scripts.

No more than three signs (indication of excluded street numbers) can be mounted on one of the poles, with the most important mark appearing at the top. As is customary in European countries, all signs are partially or fully reflective or provided with their own nighttime lighting.

The current design series was introduced through reforms which came into effect June 1, 2006, replacing the old devices from 1967. When the law outlining these reforms was published on October 7, 2005, some signs have been changed before the law comes into force. The most important change is the removal of hats and hair on the stickmen making them gender neutral, but many signs are redesigned or introduced for the first time, as mentioned below.

Danger warning sign

The warning sign is mostly triangular, with a black symbol on a white background with a red border. The warning signs used only temporarily have a yellow background. On Svalbard, unique warning signs with black backgrounds and white symbols are used for polar bears.

Signs of ban

The border signs are mostly circular, with a black symbol on a white background with a red border. Exceptions are rectangular zone marks, and there are no parking signs that use red symbols on a blue background. These signs are valid from where they stand and for the entire path until terminated by another sign, or until the next intersection depends on the special sign.

Mandatory signs

Sign markers inform drivers about the road direction, or warn of obstacles near or on the road. Temporary marker marks, e.g. during the road work, use a red background color.
