TBD (also referred to unofficially as TBD-TV ) is an American digital broadcast television network owned by Sinclair Television Group subsidiary of Sinclair Broadcast Group. Targeting millennium audiences, the network focuses on internet-based series and other digital content (including featuring user-created music videos, animations and comedy, eSports, and a half-hour and an hour short web episode of web shorts), along with multiple screen movies.

The development of TBD was traced by a management visit by the Sinclair Broadcasting Group to the Channel Santa Monica, California headquarters in early 2016 (Sinclair bought a cable network in January of that year). While in the main control room at Tennis Channel, company executives saw monitors carrying foreign food from The QYOU, a Dublin-based digital media company and online video services led by founders Curt Marvis and Scott Ehrlich, who curated various video content online collected. from various manufacturers to a European audience. Viewing a QYOU feed sparked a conversation among executives about the development of similar services for television viewers in the United States, which Sinclair continues to bring to the concept.

The company officially announced plans to launch TBD on December 7, 2016. TBD is the second of three digital broadcasting networks developed and launched by Sinclair during 2010: previously launched a science-focused focusing network in October 2015, and around the time of TBD announcement, also revealed plans to launch the action-adventure network Charge!, a joint venture with Comet partner MGM Television that debuted on February 28, 2017 (since January 2016, Sinclair has also operated a 24-hour feed from the American Sports Network, otherwise unstructured as an ad hoc syndication service aired based on event-driven in either the primary channel or sub-channel of the carrier station that maintains the conventional entertainment format). To assemble the programming and help provide creative support for TBD, Sinclair retains the QYOU service, marking the first attempt into an advertiser-supported television broadcast for the company, which has operated a pay-TV service in Europe; QYOU does not rule out the development of similar subscription television services in the US or ad-supported networks that are modeled after TBDs in other countries.

In a press release announcing the launch of TBD, Sinclair stated that the network would "revive traditional television for the current millennium audience," demographic groups that tend to enjoy video content through online sources in addition to traditional broadcast or cable television, although some in demographics do complement online content with over-the-air television. Indeed, more contemporary networking programming (first-line and digital video) and younger audience targets make TBD unique compared to many other digital multicast networks featuring classic television programs and movies intended for older viewers or special audiences by type genital, ethnic or genre interests. As part of the millennium reach, TBD uses an "agnostic display" approach to delivery, appearing not only in broadcast television, but through online platforms and ultimately through apps for smartphones, tablets and smart TV devices (network websites providing live programming streams, ads and interstitial segments served during breaks in and between programs).

The name "TBD" came in the form of a roundabout for Sinclair: at the beginning of the network conception, Scott Shapiro, Sinclair's vice president for corporate development, calling it the acronym for "determined". Recognizing that Sinclair's 2014 acquisition of Allbritton Communications includes the ownership of the TBD.com domain name (used for Allbritton Washington-DC news sites and also briefly for its NewsChannel 8 regional cable news channel), the network was formally named TBD and the domain TBD.com as, according to a Sinclair press release announcing its launch, "TBD entertainment promise is always 'Specified.'" TBD started broadcasting as a "soft launch" on February 13, 2017 on subchannels from two Sinclair stations: Fox WLUK-TV affiliate in Green Bay , Wisconsin and CBS WTVH affiliate in Syracuse, New York (the latter operated by Sinclair through a joint service agreement with the owner of WTVH Granite Broadcasting).

Programming

TBD schedules feature web-based, unpublished and scriptwriting series, event programming and featurettes - featuring topical and themed categories including but not limited to science, fashion, lifestyle, travel, music, comedy, games, eSports , and viral content - through agreements with various online content producers and distributors who licensed their content to QYOU for broadcast on TBD including: Canvas Media Studios, Jukin Media, Filmhub (formerly Kinonation), Legendary Entertainment (including content from subsidiaries Nerdist Industries and Geek and Sundry), Whistle Sports Network (which also provides short segments that aired during certain commercial breaks) and Zoomin.TV. Through its partnership with The QYOU, TBD also carries a daily "preview" block of a day-to-day service-based video compilation program, regularly broadcasted overnight and morning seven days a week, Monday to Saturday afternoon and on weekdays (TBD does not carrying a sample block from the QYOU weekend program, opting for air re-aircasts selected from QYOU days network-served blocks during the previous week in the morning and late on Saturday and Sunday). Since September 2017, TBD has rescheduled its daily QYOU block in its schedule, handing in the mid-day time slots and weekends mid-afternoon time to other network entertainment programs.

The network also carries traditional long-form films and films - broadcast as part of "TBD of the Day" film, aired seven days a week at noon and on Thursday night - obtained through an agreement with independent film distributor Gravitas Ventures. Wrap covers and other bumper segments can be used at some point (to serve as transitions between events or videos), as well as the possible use of direct contribution from viewers.

Sinclair also negotiates agreements with other web content producers, distributors and application developers to provide programming for the network. Other possible content paths for TBD can come through the resources of news stations that generate news between Sinclair's stable 172 owned or operated television stations and their website, which will bring a variety of local lifestyles and features that they produce to national audiences through TBD, as well as through its digital news service Circa News.

The network currently holds exclusive responsibility for advertising sales, setting aside three to six minutes per hour of ad inventory in its program break; the ads in TBD currently consist mostly of public service announcements and some direct response ads (the time left is usually filled by interstitials generated by Whistle Sports), although the network encourages potential national sponsors to develop experimental ads tailored to appeal in the direction network key demographics.. Sinclair plans to review allowing TBD affiliates to be able to rent out time to include station promotions and advertising for local businesses in the future.

Affiliate

On March 7, 2017, TBD has an affiliation agreement currently and pending with 55 television stations in 45 media markets (all owned or operated by Sinclair) in 25 states and the District of Columbia. The network has a combined national coverage of 22.44% of all households in the United States (or 70,129,858 Americans with at least one television set).

Together with WLUK and WTVH, the "soft launch" of TBD Sinclair during the week of 13 February 2017, saw the network added to digital subchannels from three other stations owned by Sinclair directly: KDSM-TV/Des Moines, KABB/San Antonio and KUNP/La Grande-Portland, Oregon. Network is being rolled out in three phases to solve any technical and transmission issues; 52 stations owned or operated by Sinclair became a TBD charter affiliate at the end of the first phase of affiliate launch in early March 2017 (most of whom joined the network on February 28). Other stations among those owned or operated by Sinclair (including stations operated through sharing agreements with third-party licenses, and Deerfield Media partner group, Howard Stirk Holdings and Cunningham Broadcasting) are expected to begin carrying TBD during the late winter and spring of 2017, either in newly created or existing subchannels affiliated with Grit, GetTV or other multicast networks that compete through affiliate agreements with Sinclair who are awaiting expiration.

The launch of Sinclair from TBD - as well as Comet and Charge! before and after - is part of the company's goal to "expand our business with a new digital multicast network that utilizes our broadcast spectrum and household coverage," as stated by company president and CEO Christopher Ripley in a press release announcing the launch of TBD. The "soft launch" at Sinclair station during the first half of 2017 is also intended to address any technical issues and transmissions. Once the problem is successful and TBD begins to gain a foothold, Sinclair will begin offering networks to individual stations and group stations in markets where Sinclair has no broadcasting presence.

Some Sinclair stations (as well as those not owned by Sinclair or its syndicated affiliated partner groups) may choose to use the TBD sub-channel as an alternative channel for the American Sports Network, interrupting the evening and/or night programs within the national TBD schedule to bring sporting events not carried by the main channel of the CW and MyNetworkTV affiliates or their independent stations. Current affiliates, WRLH-TV in Richmond, Virginia - carrying networks on the DT2 sub-channel - do not carry a full TBD programming schedule, showcase MyNetworkTV's main time line in place of the airing TBD program from 8:00 to 10:00 pm East (such arrangements, originating from previous affiliates subchannels with this TV, are necessary because Richmond market does not have enough commercial stations for MyNetworkTV to retain mainstream channel affiliates).
