History
UMUC is the result of an evening program for adults at the University of Maryland, which began in the 1920s. In 1947, the College of Special and Continuation Studies (CSCS) was established. In 1959, The CSCS became University of Maryland University College (UMUC). In 1970, UMUC became an independent institution, and became a member of the University of Maryland System in 1988.
UMUC previously had an international campus in SchwÃÆ' ßbisch GmÃÆ'ünd, Germany, (near Stuttgart), until 2002. It also runs a two-year residential campus in Munich, Germany, from 1950 to 1992, which then moved to Augsburg, Germany, from 1993-1994, and then to Mannheim, Germany, in 1995 until it was finally closed in 2005. The housing campus offers a two-year associate degree and mainly serves high school graduates of US military children and government personnel stationed in Europe.
UMUC offers courses in more than 130 military installations in locations throughout Europe and the Middle East, as well as in Asia. In 2004, UMUC shared the ICDE Excellence Award from the International Council for Open and Distance Education. In FY 2007, UMUC offers classes on-site in 22 countries worldwide, each enrolling 16,908 and 21,554 students each, through Asian and European divisions, including the Middle East.
Name of university
UMUC is a college in the traditional sense of the American word, although university-related - hence, "University College." The prefix "University of Maryland" shows the historical entity from which the college originated. In the name of the university, "University College" represents "special concentration on professional development," while "University of Maryland" represents university affiliation with the University of Maryland System. For American ears, the words "university" and "college" may sound the same, and "University College" would be exaggerated in its name. Among university universities in Europe, however, the practice of giving one college in university the name "University College" is unusual. In the UK, for example, one of 39 colleges at Oxford University is called University College, Oxford, and University College London (UCL), part of the University of London.
When UMUC first opened in 1947, the school was renamed the College of Special and Continuation Studies to distinguish it as an independent institution from the University of Maryland, College Park. In 1953, Raymond Ehrensberger, the rector of the institution at the time, wanted to change the name into something more meaningful and less complicated for people to say and remember. Initial suggestions for names include College of General Studies, College of Adult Education and University College.
In 1959, Chancellor Ehrensberger persuaded the Maryland University Board System Board to change its name to University of Maryland University College. The name "University College" was adopted from the British university system to describe educational institutions that offer "programs and programs from all academic departments outside the walls of the university and normal class time." Therefore, UMUC is not a division of the University of Maryland, College Park, but rather a separate institution within the University of Maryland System.

Academic and degree programs
UMUC is one of the largest providers of distance education in the United States. Courses are delivered in traditional classroom settings, as well as online. Even before the advent of online education through the World Wide Web, UMUC is the pioneer of distance education and offers distance learning using the WebTycho interface with dial-up access. UMUC then adopted the use of the Web for connectivity to the online classroom, as well as using television and correspondence courses to deliver course content.

- Graduate School
Bachelor
The Undergraduate School offers 32 undergraduate programs and 48 undergraduate certificates, which are awarded in business management, computer/information technology, communications, criminal justice/legal studies, and social sciences. Undergraduate students can earn credit through a classroom-based course and online or through the Cooperative Learning and Prior Learning program. The undergraduate program functions as a continuation of the Community Colleges of Maryland and elsewhere. The previous Cooperative and Learning Education program offers a high-level degree option for completed workplace or military education and training. The program provides general education credits that can be applied for a degree at UMUC.
Graduates
Graduate School offers 18 master degree programs, 38 postgraduate certificates, and Doctor of Management. Most of the postgraduate programs are available in class and online format. Some master's degrees are available in an accelerated Executive format.
Location used
UMUC offers face-to-face and support courses in Afghanistan and Djibouti, Africa. UMUC deployed both faculty members and staff members to bases across Afghanistan and at Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti to support military personnel at the base. UMUC has been assisting military personnel in declining locations since the Army gave its permission in 2005.
Afghanistan
Currently, UMUC offers courses and services at four major Army Education Centers, located at Bagram Air Field, Kabul (Camp Phoenix), Salerno and Kandahar. Bagram Air Field is the largest site in Afghanistan, with approximately 275 active enrollments per session, and up to twenty courses face to face. The four sites have college professors and Field Representatives assigned to assist soldiers, aviators, marines and sailors with UMUC programs and courses.
Field Reps, commonly referred to as Field Reps, joins faculty members to help promote and facilitate UMUC programs on each site. Field Reps helps students with enrollment, tuition assistance, and textbook sales, as well as guidance and assistance with academic and career goals. The Field Rep is also responsible for local programs, to include marketing and maintaining relationships with military personnel.
Faculty members assigned to downrange locations teach service members wherever they are. Classrooms are limited in Afghanistan, and faculty members teach their classes anywhere, including hangars, conference room units, dining facilities, even chapels and picnic benches. Faculty members, known and referred to as instructors, also help Field Rep located where they are in helping students and promoting classes and programs.
Djibouti
Classes are held at Camp Lemonnier at Naval base in Djibouti City. Classes are taught by faculty members at the site and can also be taught by military personnel who hold a Master's or Doctorate degree and have prior teaching experience. A full-time UMUC faculty member also serves as a counselor for students already enrolled in the UMUC program, and to military personnel who wish to take classes. Most of the students at Lemonnier receive financial assistance through military programs to support higher education for their members.
Campus and facilities
Headquarters/main campus
The headquarters for UMUC is located in Adelphi, Maryland near the University of Maryland campus, College Park. By the end of 2000, UMUC's headquarters were registered in College Park, Maryland. In an effort to establish his own identity as an independent university, UMUC changed its postal address to Adelphi, an unincorporated community bordering College Park. Changing addresses with the US Postal Service does not involve physically moving people and facilities. The marketing decision to change the postal address is one of the many made by UMUC to distinguish the university as one of the largest distance education centers, with over 90,000 students enrolled worldwide.
Academic building
- Academic Center at Largo
- Students & amp; Faculty Services Center (SFSC) (Headquarters)
- College Park Marriott
UMUC bought for $ 38 million at its new headquarters building in Largo, Maryland, which used to be the headquarters site for Hechinger and Raytheon's corporate office. UMUC strengthens its new headquarters to meet the "green" building requirements for LEED certification. UMUC follows the same process as did to achieve LEED certification in 2005 for Inn & amp; Conference Center, which became the first hotel complex in the United States to gain certification as a green building.
UMUC began relocating its academic departments and offices to the new Academic Center in Largo in September 2009, and completed the process in 2010. UMUC began offering campus classes at the new Academic Center in the Spring semester of 2010.

The average age of graduate students in the United States is 31. Nearly two-thirds of graduate MBA students marry, half are women, and more than a third are minorities. More than a third of UMUC students in the United States are African-American, and these minorities earn more than a third of university degrees.

UMUC is ranked # 1 in The Military Times's "Best for Vets: Colleges 2015" list of online and non-traditional schools. The "Best for Vets" Military Times is one of the most respected and comprehensive ranks for veterans who are considering higher education. This publication looks at US Department of Education statistics on student success and academic quality, as well as areas such as university culture, student support, and academic policy in evaluating hundreds of schools.
In 2011 UMUC received the Institutional Award from the College and Military College Boards (CCME), a non-profit organization established to promote, encourage and deliver quality education to service members and their families in all branches of the US armed services. The Institution Award is awarded to a college or university that supplies quality education programs to armed services.
