Comedians or comics are people who try to entertain the audience by making them laugh. It may be through jokes or funny situations or acting stupid (as in slapstick) or using comedy prop. A comedian who talks directly to an audience is referred to as a stand-alone comedian.

A popular saying, widely quoted but generally linked to Ed Wynn, is, "Comics say funny things; a comedian says funny things", which illustrates the difference between how much comedy can be attributed to verbal content and how much acting and persona.

Since the 1980s, a new wave of comedy, called alternative comedy, has grown in popularity with more unusual and experimental styles. This usually involves more experience, or observation reporting, mainly done by Alexei Sayle, Daniel Tosh, Louis C.K. and Malcolm Hardee. As far as content is concerned, comedians like Tommy Tiernan, Des Bishop, and Joan Rivers draw their background to make fun of themselves, while others like Jon Stewart, and Ben Elton have a very strong political and cultural tone.

Many comics follow the cult while visiting famous comedy centers such as the Just for Laughs festival in Montreal, Edinburgh Fringe and the Melbourne Comedy Festival in Australia. Often comic careers evolved significantly when they won famous comedy awards, such as the Edinburgh Comedy Award (formerly the Perrier comedy award). Comics sometimes plunge into other entertainment areas, such as movies and television, where they become more widely known; e.g., Eddie Izzard or Ricky Gervais. However, the success of the stand-up comic does not guarantee the success of a successful movie or box office.

History

Ancient Greek

Comedians can date back to 425 BC, when Aristophanes, a comic writer and playwright, wrote ancient comedy dramas. He wrote 40 comedy, 11 of which survived and still do. The comedy style of Aristophanes takes the form of a satyr drama.

Shakespeare's Comedy

The English poet and playwright William Shakespeare wrote many comedies. Shakespeare's comedy is one that has a happy ending, usually involving marriage between unmarried characters, and a lighter tone and style than any other Shakespeare drama.

Modern era

Charlie Chaplin was the most popular screen comedian in the first half of the 20th century. Chaplin and Stan Laurel are protà ©  © Fred Karno, an English theater impresario in the music hall of England, and in his biography Laurel states, "Fred Karno did not teach Charlie [Chaplin] and I'm all we know about comedy He just taught us some big from it ". Chaplin wrote comedy mute movies such as Modern Times and The Kid . His films still have a big influence on comedy in movies today.

One of the most popular forms of modern comedy is the stand-up comedy. Stand-up comedy is a comic monolog done by one or more people standing on stage. Bob Hope is the most popular stand-up comedian of the 20th century, and has also starred in many comedy movies over the span of five decades. Other famous stand-up comedies include Billy Connolly, George Carlin, Jerry Seinfeld, Lenny Bruce, Mort Sahl, Louis CK and Chris Rock.

Another popular form of modern comedy is a talk show where comedians make fun of current news or popular topics. Such comedians include Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien, Graham Norton, Daniel Tosh, Chris Hardwick, Jimmy Fallon, David Letterman, and Chelsea Handler.

The third form of modern comedy is a television program in which many comedians unite to make plays, such as the Monty Python group that makes their sketch comedy show Monty Python Flying Circus, the BBC show that is influenced by Saturday Night Live . These shows are often ranked highly, possibly because many comedians band together to create a joke, and not a comedian who creates his own joke.

Ellen DeGeneres has staked her comic career into movies, television shows and organizing major media events. In 1986, Ellen DeGeneres appeared for the first time on The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson since he began gaining popularity as a stand-up comic in the 1980s. Johnny Carson, who launched many contemporary comic careers, sometimes invited them to join him on the couch for a one-on-one conversation after they set up. It was Carson's stamp of approval, and because of its incredible popularity, and the lack of other national spotlights for comics, Carson, "until the early 90s, was the biggest influence on whether a comedian's career took off." He likened DeGeneres to Bob Newhart, and invited him to chat on the screen after his performance; he became the first comedian to be offered the opportunity.

Personality characters

In a January 2014 study, conducted in the British Journal of Psychiatry, scientists found that comedians tend to have high levels of psychotic personality. In the study, researchers analyzed 404 male and 119 comedian women from Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Participants were asked to complete an online questionnaire designed to measure psychotic traits in healthy people. They found that comedians scored "significantly higher on four types of psychotic characteristics compared to a control group of people who had non-creative jobs." Gordon Claridge, a professor of experimental psychology at the University of Oxford and leader of the study stated, "The creative elements needed to produce humor are very similar to the cognitive style characteristics of people with psychosis - both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. However, labeling comedian personality traits as "psychotic" does not mean that the individual is a psychopath, because psychopathy is different from psychosis, and it does not mean that their behavior is always pathological.
