DOMO

Domo-kun first appeared in a short stop-motion sketch on December 22, 1998 to mark the 10th anniversary of NHK satellite broadcasting. The name "Domo" was obtained during the second episode of the show, where a TV announcer said " d? Mo, konnichiwa " ( ??????? ? ) , which is a phrase that can be translated as "Well, hello there!" but which can also be interpreted as "Hello, Domo", and thus is a convenient sentence ( dajare ). The kun suffix on "Domo-kun", the name used to describe the characters in the Japanese version, is a Japanese-language honor often used with young men.

Character

Domo , the main character, is a brown, furry and windy monster with a big mouth, a saw tooth that is locked wide open. His favorite food is nikujaga, a meat stew and Japanese potato, and he hates apples for unknown genetic reasons. According to Tokyopop's press release from comic book Domo, Domo "communicates sotto voce with a passion that only friends can understand." Clint Bickham, comic book writer Domo, says that to him Domo's expression is "a kind of cheerful miracle, like when a child wakes up in a room full of presents on Christmas day." While Domo's face has a variant, for Bickham most of his expressions have "an underlying sense of interest." Domo is known to often dispose of gas when nervous or upset. He also sweats when nervous.

Domo lives in a cave with Mr. Usaji , known in the Japanese version as Usajii ( ???? ) , a portmanteau of the word usagi , (rabbit), and jii ( ?? ) (old man, grandpa). Mr. Usaji is a wise old rabbit who has lived in a cave for decades, likes watching television and drinking astringent green tea. Mr. Usaji does not use any "new" material, and does not have a phone. In terms of fashion, Mr. Usaji focuses on matter, not form. Mr.'s favorite food Usaji is carrots, and his favorite food is "something that is meaningless."

Also in the cave live two bats, a mother named Maya ( Shinobu ( ??? ) in Japanese version) and his child Mario ( Morio ( ??? ) Japanese language). In English, Tashanna has a "weasely accent" ?????? , itachi namari ) (remember civet in Japan is not related to cheating) and end the sentence with "y" s. In the Japanese version, he ends his sentence with "chi" (?). He has not had a boyfriend in ten years and he's looking for an eternal boyfriend. He had a desire to bid in the auction, but he gave up in the end. Tashanna's favorite food is an apricot and mint tart, and her favorite food is sea urchin. The Japanese name is derived from the word "multichannel" ( ?????? , tachanneru ) from digital broadcasting.

Bear Boy ( Kogumagor? ( ?????? ) ), also known as A Little Bear ( ???? , Kuma no ko , literally "bear child") , is the Moon Bear and one of Domo's friends from the neighborhood; shy children love to play baseball.

Bickham decided to use a series of short stories rather than a long story to "re-create the nuances of the original series," "so hopefully reading the manga story will be the same as watching the episode of the show." Bickham said that writing stories became entertaining when he "got into Domo's mindset." The author says that Domo's thoughts need not be expressed in words because they are "always very simple and innocent." Bickham added that sometimes other characters speak for him. Bickham says that the "Domo: the Manga" story "is driven by a situation rather than a dialogue." To prepare series writing, Bickham watched each episode several times; Bickham intends to "understand the characters so that the leap from stop-motion to the manga will be as simple as possible."
