The lamp lights (English English), light fitting (English English), or luminaire are electrical devices that contain electric lights that illuminate. All lights have a body fixture and one or more lamps. The lamp may be in the socket for easy replacement - or, in the case of some LED fixtures, programmed in place.

The equipment may also have a switch to control the light, either attached to the lamp body or attached to the power cord. Permanent fixtures, such as dining room hanging lamps, may not have a switch on the fix itself, but are dependent on a wall switch.

The equipment requires an electrical connection to a power source, usually AC power, but some run on battery power for camping or emergency lights. The permanent light fixtures are directly transferred. The moving lights have plugs and cables connected to the wall socket.

Light fixtures may also have other features, such as reflectors for directing light, aperture (with or without lens), outer shell or housing for alignment and protection of lamps, electric ballasts or power supplies, and shading to relieve turning or directing them to the workspace (eg , table lamp). A wide range of special lamps are created for use in automotive, aerospace, marine and pharmaceutical lighting industries.

Portable lights are often called lights , as in table lamp or table lamp . In technical terminology, the lamp is a light source, which, in casual terms, is called a light bulb. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) recommends the term luminaire for technical use.

History

Manufacturing equipment begins immediately after the production of incandescent light bulbs. When practical use of fluorescent lighting was realized after 1924, three leading companies to manufacture various supplies were Lightolier, Artcraft Fluorescent Lighting Corporation, and Globe Lighting in the United States.
