Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac is a version of the Microsoft Office productivity suite for Mac OS X. It replaces Office 2004 for Mac (which does not have native Intel code) and is a Mac OS X equivalent to Office 2007. Office 2008 was developed by Microsoft Macintosh Business Unit and released on January 15, 2008. Office 2008 followed by Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 released on October 26, 2010, requires a Mac with Intel processors and Mac OS versions 10.5 to 10.12 (Office 2008 is not compatible with High Sierra/10.13). Office 2008 is also the latest version for the Entourage feature, which was replaced by Outlook in Office 2011.

Release

Office 2008 was originally scheduled for release in the second half of 2007; However, it was postponed until January 2008, it was said to allow time to fix bugs for long. Office 2008 is the only version of Office for Mac that is provided as Universal Binary.

Unlike Office 2007 for Windows, Office 2008 is not offered as a public beta before the scheduled release date.

Features

Office 2008 for Mac includes the same core programs that are currently included with Office 2004 for Mac: Entourage, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.

The included Mac-specific feature is a publishing layout view, offering similar functionality to Microsoft Publisher for Windows, the "Ledger Sheet Mode" in Excel for easy financial tasks, and the "My Day" app that offers a quick way to view day events that.

Office 2008 supports the new Office Open XML format, and defaults to save all files in this format. On February 21, 2008, Geoff Price revealed that the format conversion update for Office 2004 will be suspended until June 2008 to provide the first update to Office 2008.

Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications is not supported in this version. As a result, Excel add-ins as dependent on VBA, like Solver, has not been bundled in the current release. In June 2008, Microsoft announced that it was exploring the idea of bringing some of the Solver functions back to Excel. At the end of August 2008, Microsoft announced that the new Solver for Excel 2008 is available as a free download from Frontline Systems, the original developer of Excel Solver. However, Excel 2008 also has no other functions, such as the Pivot Chart functionality, which has long been featured in the Windows version. In May 2008, Microsoft announced that VBA will make a return on the next version of Microsoft Office for Mac. AppleScript and Open Scripting Architecture will still be supported.

Limitations

Office 2008 for Mac does not have parity features with the Windows version. Lack of Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) support in Excel makes it impossible to use macros programmed in VBA. Microsoft's response is that adding VBA support in Xcode will result in an additional two years added to the 2008 Office development cycle. Other unsupported features include: OMML equations generated in Word 2007 for Windows, Office "Ribbon", Mini Toolbar, Live Preview, and an extensive list of unsupported features such as SharePoint integration equivalent to Windows versions. Some features are missing in Excel 2008 for Mac, including: data filters (Data Bar, Top 10, Color based, Icon based), structured references, Excel tables, Table styles, sorting features that allow more than three columns at once and more than one filter on a sort.

Benchmarks show that the original release of Office 2008 runs slower on Macs with PowerPC processors, and does not provide significant bump speeds for Macs with Intel processors.

Data compatibility issues have also been noted with CambridgeSoft's chemical structure drawing program, ChemDraw. Word 2008 does not store structural information when the chemical structure is copied from ChemDraw and pasted into the document. If the structure is tidied from a Word 2008 document, and affixed back to ChemDraw, it appears as an image that can not be edited than a known chemical structure. There is no such problem in Word 2004 or X. This problem has not been fixed in SP2 (version 12.2.0, released in July 2009).

On May 13, 2008, Microsoft released Office 2008 Service Pack 1 as a free update. However, there are many reports about the failed installer, generating a message saying that the latest version of Office 2008 is not found. This seems to be related to users who modify the contents of Microsoft Office folders in a way that does not cause problems with most other software (such as "localize" using programs to remove application support files in unwanted languages), and which does not affect Office operations, but that causes updaters' installers to believe that the application does not apply to updates. A small modification on the installer has found an effective way of working (see references).

Another widespread problem reported after SP1 is that Office files will no longer open in Office applications when opened (double-clicked) from Mac OS X Finder or launched from other applications such as email attachments. The trigger for this problem is that Microsoft in SP1 unilaterally and without warning outdated certain old Mac OS 'Type' codes like "WDBN" which may be some files, either because they are very old, or because some apps specify an older type of code when saving it to disc. Users have seen problems affecting a relatively new Type Code, however, like 'W6BN'. Microsoft seems to find out the problem, but it is unclear whether they will return the older Type code, citing security concerns.

Another problem with cross-platform compatibility is an image entered into any Office application by using cut and paste or dragging and dropping results in a file that does not display an inserted image when viewed on a Windows machine. Instead, Windows users are told "QuickTime and TIFF (LZW) Decompressors are required to view this image". A user presented a solution as far back as December 2004.

A further example of the lack of parity features is the track change function. While Word 2003 or 2007 users for Windows can choose freely between displaying their changes in-line or like a balloon in the right margin, selecting previous options in Word 2004 or Word 2008 for Mac OS also turns off all comment balloons; comments in this case can only be seen in the Review Panel or as pop-up boxes (eg with mouse gestures). This issue has not been resolved to date and is present in the latest Word version for Mac, which is Word 2011.

The Toolbox found in Office 2008 also has issues when the OS X Spaces feature is used: switching from one Room to another will cause the Toolbox element to be stuck in one Room until the Toolbox is closed and reopened. The only solution to this problem is to disable Spaces at this time, or at least restrain yourself to use it while working in Office 2008. Microsoft has acknowledged this problem and stated that it is an architectural issue with the implementation of Spaces. Apple has been notified of the issue, according to Microsoft. The problem seems to be due to the fact that the Carbon based Toolbox. Using Microsoft Office with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard solves some problems.

In addition, there is no support for right-to-left and two-way languages (such as Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, etc.) in Office 2008, making it impossible to read or edit right-to-left documents in Word 2008 or PowerPoint 2008. Languages such Thailand is also not supported, although installing fonts can sometimes allow documents written in this language to display.

In addition, Office 2008 check tools support only a limited number of languages (Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, and Swiss German). Testers for other languages fail to find their way to the installation package, and are not offered by Microsoft commercially in the form of separate language packages. At the same time, the Office app is not integrated with the Mac OS X 10.6 Leopard native check tool.

Microsoft Visio is not available for OS X. This means that all Visio diagrams embedded in other Office documents (eg Word) can not be edited in Office on a Mac. The embedded Visio diagram appears as a low-quality bitmap both in the WYSIWYG editor and after printing a document on a Mac.
