Microsoft Office 2016 (code-named Office 16 ) is a version of the Microsoft Office productivity suite, managed both Office 2013 and Office for Mac 2011. It was released on macOS on July 9, 2015 and Microsoft Windows on September 22, 2015 for Office 365 subscribers. Mainstream support ends on October 13, 2020, and extended support ends on October 14, 2025. Licensed versions remain on macOS and Windows released on September 22, 2015. Because the successors of Office 2019 will only support Windows 10 or Windows Server 2016, this is the latest version of Microsoft Office that is compatible with Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1.

Windows
New features in the Windows release include the ability to create, open, edit, and store files in the cloud directly from the desktop, a new search tool for commands available in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook and Access named "Tell Me", more the "Send As" option in Word and PowerPoint, and work in real time with the users connected to Office Online. Other smaller features include Insight, a feature supported by Bing to provide contextual information from the web, sidebar Designer in PowerPoint to optimize slide layouts, chart types and new templates in Excel (like treemap, sunburst chart (also known as ring chart) , waterfall charts, box plots and histograms, as well as financial and calendar templates), new animations in PowerPoint (such as Morf transitions), the ability to insert online videos in OneNote, and data loss prevention features in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Microsoft Office 2016 can not coexist with Microsoft Office 2013 applications, but can coexist with earlier versions of Microsoft Office, such as 2003, 2007, and 2010. Microsoft requires that each 2013 version be uninstalled, which will be offered to do so automatically, before Version 2016 can be installed. Microsoft Office 2016 will display Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files created with Microsoft Office 97 through 2003 with the Microsoft Office 2000 symbol in place of the Microsoft Office 2016 symbol.
Mac
New features in the Mac release include an updated user interface that uses ribbon, full support for Retina Display, and new sharing features for Office documents.
In Word, there's a new Design tab, Insight feature, powered by Bing, and a real-time co-author. In Excel, there are Graph Feature features, and PivotTable Slicers. In PowerPoint, there is a theme variant, which provides different color schemes for a theme. In Outlook, there's a New Suggest Time feature, the ability to view side-by-side calendars, and weather forecasts in the calendar view.
Outlook 2016 for Mac has very limited support for synchronizing collaboration services outside of basic email.
With version 15.25, Office for Mac is redirected from 32-bit to 64-bit by default. Users who need a 32-bit version for compatibility reasons will be able to download version 15.25 as a manual, one-off update from Microsoft Office website. All versions after 15.25 will only be 64-bit. Office for Mac received Touch Bar support in update on February 16, 2017, following the launch of the 2016 MacBook Pro model.

Traditional edition
Like the previous version, Office 2016 is available in several different editions targeted at different markets. All traditional editions of Microsoft Office 2016 contain Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote and are licensed for use on a single computer.
Five traditional editions of Office 2016 released for Windows:
- Home & amp; Learners : This retail package includes only core applications.
- Home & amp; Business : This retail package includes both core and Outlook applications.
- Standards : This suite is available only through volume licensing channels, including core applications, as well as Outlook and Publisher.
- Professional : This retail package includes core applications, as well as Outlook, Publisher, and Access.
- Professional Plus : This suite is available only through volume licensing channels, including core applications, as well as Outlook, Publisher, Access, and Skype for Business.

Office 365
The Office 365 subscription service, previously intended for business and enterprise users, is extended to Office 2016 to include new plans intended for home use. Subscriptions allow the use of Office 2016 applications by many users using the software as a service model. Different packages are available for Office 365, some of which also include value-added services, such as 1 TB OneDrive storage and 60 minutes of Skype per month on the Premium Home package.
Design
The design of the Office 2016 user interface for Windows is relatively unchanged from its predecessor, Microsoft Office 2013. It retains the flat design that was introduced along with the Metro design language, albeit with some modifications to the layout, to fit the design of Microsoft Office Mobile. When Office 2016 was released, there were three themes. The default theme, known as "colorful", displays solid colors on the ribbon over the ribbon, according to the color of Office apps used, for example, solid dark blue colors clearly displayed in Microsoft Word. The theme is portrayed useful in making tab titles more clear. In addition, the "white" and "dark gray" themes of Office 2013 are also available, although no new backgrounds are added, and existing backgrounds are not deleted. The fourth "black" theme was added as part of the update in January 2016. The update was not released for traditional edition users.
