History
The SAP HANA platform has been available since 2010, and SAP applications such as SAP ERP and SAP Business Suite have been able to run in the SAP HANA database and/or other databases.

Growth continued into the third quarter of 2015. After the announcement of third-quarter earnings, SAP said the number of SAP S/4HANA customers has increased to 1,300. After the closing of the fourth quarter of 2016, SAP announced that 5,400 customers have implemented SAP S/4HANA.

SAP S/4HANA can be used on-site, in the cloud (private or public), or through hybrid models that support various implementation scenarios.
Implementation
There are various ways to get to S/4HANA, this depends on the customer's starting point. For example, new implementations, system conversions, and landscape transformations.
- New implementation - This is a new implementation of SAP S/4HANA ( green field ): customers who migrated from non-SAP legacy systems or from SAP ERP systems and new system implementations requiring loading preliminary data. In this scenario, SAP S/4HANA systems are implemented, and master and transactional data migrate from legacy systems, so standard data and content migration tools should be used.
- System conversion - This is a complete conversion from an existing SAP Business Suite system to SAP S/4HANA ( lift & shift ): customers who want to change their current SAP ERP system to SAP S/4HANA. This scenario is technically based on Software Update Manager (SUM) with Database Migration Options (DMO) if the customer has not used SAP HANA as the underlying database.
- Landscape transformation - This is a consolidation of the current SAP regional system into a single global SAP S/4HANA system or separation of different parts of a system: customers who wish to consolidate their landscape or carve selected entities (such as company code) or processes into a single S/4HANA SAP system.
Product life cycle
Both SAP S/4HANA in place and the SAP S/4HANA cloud edition have released strategies involving quarterly submissions. The cloud edition is released every three months. The local edition has one new release per year, and receives additional functions and additional corrections in the form of Feature Pack Stacks (FPS) or Service Pack Stacks (SPS) every quarter.
In place: Each year, SAP sends a new product version for SAP S/4HANA product in place (eg SAP S/4HANA 1610) this will always be followed by three consecutive FPS in each quarter, after SAP it released the next product version and the previous product version received SPS every three months until the end of mainstream maintenance.
