The Second City Training Center was established in the mid-1980s to facilitate increased demand for workshops and instruction from world-famous Second City theater. The Training Center is located in Chicago, Toronto, and Los Angeles. Previous satellite centers exist in Metro Detroit, Las Vegas, Cleveland and New York City.

History
The centers offer various classes for different ages. Study programs include improvisation, comedy writing, acting & amp; study scenes, stand-ups, jokes, musical improvisations, and youth and youth classes. The flagship program is the Conservatory that trains players in the style of the Second City creating comedy sketches through the process of improvisation techniques. The Conservatory requires an audition to enter the program and culminates with an event written and performed for several weeks by a graduation class. A graduate of the Chicago Conservatory is eligible to audition and work with the Training Center Team.
Each center also offers specialized workshops in various fields such as advanced improvisation techniques, long form improvisations, and upright comedy. For students who do not live near one of the Training Centers, they offer three-day intensive and week-long immersions held throughout the year as well as online comedy writing classes. The Training Center also offers various classes for children and adolescents including winter, spring and summer camps.
Former Student Training Center includes Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Scott Adsit, Anders Holm, Amy Poehler, Cecily Strong, Mike Myers, Chris Farley, Tim Meadows, Bonnie Hunt, Stephen Colbert, Halle Berry, Sean Hayes, Jon Favreau, Hinton Battle, Jack McBrayer, Dave Foley, Kevin McDonald, and Josh Willis. Classes are taught by working professionals, many of whom are the players of the Second City and now.
From 1985 until his death in 2001, the Second City Training Center was led by Martin de Maat. The Chicago Training Center facility is now dedicated to it and displays a placard containing one of its most famous quotes, "You are pure potential."
The Second City Training Center operates under the leadership of Kevin Frank (Artistic Director, Toronto), Joshua Funk (Artistic Director, Hollywood), Matt Hovde (Artistic Director, Chicago) and Kerry Sheehan (President, Second City Training Center).
