Reordering conference

During 2010 off-season, some conferences announced changes in membership. Due to the conference notification requirement, this change will not take effect until 2011 soonest.

The first step came on June 10, when the Pacific-10 Conference announced that Colorado had accepted their invitation to join from Big 12.

The next day, June 11, saw two schools change the conference. The Western Mountain Conference announced that Boise State had accepted their invitation to join from the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), while Nebraska ended its longtime affiliation with the Big Eight/Big 12 to join the Big Ten Conference. Both steps will take effect from the academic year 2011-2012.

In the days that followed, much speculation that five public schools in the Big 12 South Division (Texas, Texas A & M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State) would leave for Pac-10 to create 16 superconference teams. However, a last-minute agreement announced on 14 June saw Texas stay in Big 12, encouraging four other schools to follow suit. Pac-10 then extended the invitation to Utah on June 16, which received the following day. With the addition of Colorado and Utah, Pac-10 announced that the conference would change its name to Pac-12 when two new members joined in July 2011.

On August 18, West Mountain responded to rumors of an imminent departure of Brigham Young by inviting WAC members Fresno State, Nevada, and Utah State. The state of Utah rejected the offer, but Fresno State and Nevada accepted the day. After the threat of legal action by the WAC, two schools agreed to remain in the WAC during the 2011-12 season in exchange for a greatly reduced outgoing fee. BYU officially announced their departure from the West Mountain on September 1st. BYU football team will become FBS Independent while all other sports will move to West Coast Conference for 2011-12 season.

On 11 November, the Western Athletic Conference announced that Texas State, a member of the Southland FCS Conference, and UTSA, which plans to launch the FCS team in 2011, will upgrade their football program to the FBS level, join the WAC in 2012, and become a full member of FBS in 2013.

On 29 November, TCU announced it would leave West Mountain to join Big East in 2012. Western Mountain replaces TCU by adding Hawaiian ? i as a ball-only member on December 10; Hawaiian ? i Other sports will join the Big West Conference.
