The post-office or post box box (usually referred to as the PO or post box box) is a mailable box uniquely located at the post office location.

In some areas, especially in Africa, there is no mail delivery from 'to home', for example, in Kenya. As a result, renting PO boxes has traditionally been the only way to receive letters in those countries. However, some, like Jordan, have introduced post home delivery.

Generally, postal boxes are rented from the post office either by individuals or by companies on a basis ranging from monthly to yearly, and rental fees vary depending on box size. District business district boxes (CBD) POs are usually more expensive than rural PO boxes.

In the United States, rental rates are used for uniforms across the country. Now, however, postal facilities can be in one of seven cost groups by location; In addition, certain customers are eligible for free box rental, usually because the Postal Service does not offer route-delivery deliveries to their physical address.

In the UK, the Royal Mail PO box is often just a pigeon hole in the safe part of the sorting office, and is only accessible by staff. In such a case, the tenant of the PO box will be issued with a card showing the post office box number and the name of the shipping office, and should generate this to the desk staff when collecting mail. For an additional fee, Royal Mail will ship the items received to the geographic address of the tenant.

Some private companies (eg, United Parcel Service (UPS) and commercial mailing agents) also offer similar services by renting mailboxes in public locations. The difference with the official PO box is that the mail sent there is addressed to the street address (along with the box number), instead of just addressing the "CSX PO Box".

The number of postboxes in stations varies greatly. Stations in small areas are often equipped with less than 100 boxes, while CBD stations may offer a combined number of more than 200,000 post boxes.

Installation of the box

The post office box is usually mounted on the wall of the post office, either an external wall or a wall in the lobby, so the staff on the inside can store mail in the box, while key holders (some older post office boxes use dial combinations to open their boxes instead of keys) in the lobby or outside the building can open the box to pick up the mail.

Lobby clock

In many post offices in the US, the PO box lobby is separated from the window service lobby, so the first can stay open at all times while the latter locks after hours. However, in the US since the 1980s, in large cities and urban areas, the post office tended to close the lobby of the overnight box because of the tendency of homeless people to use it for beds. As a result, some of the box lobbies can be accessed after hours by customers given the code to the door keypad. In addition, some post offices are located in rental facilities such as shopping centers. As a result, the PO box is only accessible when the facility is open.

Packages

If the parcel does not fit in the PO box, the postmaster will leave a note advising the customer to retrieve the packet from the counter. In some post offices, keys will be left in the PO box associated with larger and locked boxes (packet lockers) where patrons can pick up the package if no signature is required. Most often, in this case, once the key is used to open a larger box, locked, the key can not be removed again by the protector, but the door can not be secured too. Records will also be left in the PO box with respect to COD transfers and registered mails to be signed.

In 2011, the US Postal Service initiated a pilot program called "gopost" which installed a larger box to handle pickup packages from uninhabited stations. The grid provided can be used by many customers thanks to the integration of computers receiving delivery codes. This system uses AS. Patent 6,690,997 , issued February 10, 2004 to Michael A. Rivalto. Deutsche Post started a similar concept called Packstation in 2001.

The privately operated Amazon Locker, started in 2011, is a similar one-time pick-up facility for packages sent to and from the company.

Shipping package by private carrier

Until 2012, packet shipments to the USPS mailbox are not available from private carriers like UPS, FedEx, and others. In early 2012, the Postal Service introduced P.O. Box Street Address (PBSA) service that allows box-holders to merge post office street addresses where their boxes reside with their mailbox numbers into street address formats. A mailing industry publication called the new service "great service for people who already have PO Boxes and do not want their packets delivered to their homes."

Locked bag and caller service

Users who receive very large amounts of mail can use a "locked bag", numbered like a PO box. In the United States, this service is called caller service, and the number assigned is called the caller's number, although the mail is usually addressed to "PO Box (caller ID)."

Security

Each country has its own rules and regulations on how a person can pick up mail at the PO Box. Some countries, such as the United States or the United Kingdom, may require one or more identification forms. Not all countries offer locked PO Boxes.

In the United States, two forms of identification are required when registering for a PO Box; one of them should be photo ID.

By continent

Many countries offer several types of PO Boxes for different uses. There is an increasing number of private companies that provide similar PO Box services to the official postal service personally under the guise of mail.

Africa

In Namibia, PO boxes are the only form of mailing for individuals. Even small settlements have PO box blocks for rent. In Windhoek, the capital and the only major city, PO box blocks are scattered throughout the city and should not be located in the post office but in shopping centers, in pedestrian zones or in public areas.

The South African Post Office has a box for rent. These are usually attached to, or close to the post office. In urban areas with PO Boxes for rent there may also be sending mail to home. In rural areas, the Post Box is often mandatory because there is no delivery on the road. In areas where there is no street delivery, the Post Box is free of charge. Street delivery boxes and postal codes may be the same in an area, or may be different. Personal bag is available for large letter mail recipients.

Asia

In Hong Kong, PO boxes are available in two different sizes. They are available in many post offices throughout the region.

In Japan, PO boxes are available in most post office locations. There is no charge to rent a post box, but the tenant should be able to retrieve mail regularly (daily, in principle) from the box. Tenants should also rent the box for 6 months or more.

In the Philippines, PO boxes are available for rent at selected post offices. PO Boxes, also known as lock boxes, are available in three sizes: small, medium and large.

In South Korea, PO boxes are available in one size at the selected post office. There is no fee to rent a PO box, but the tenant must pick up the mail at least once in 30 days. Applications are only available at the post office with valid IDs, seals to receive registered mail, and key fees (usually around 10,000 won). Seoul CPO box space is the only PO box in Korea with a fully automated email retrieval system.

Oceania

Australia

In Australia, PO boxes mounted on the wall are available in five sizes: small, medium, large, jumbo and A4. The boxes of different sizes can be mixed almost completely arbitrarily on the wall. There are also options for locked private bags that come in two different sizes as well: small and large.

PO boxes and locked private bags can be combined.

New Zealand

In New Zealand, customers have the option of choosing between two PO Box sizes: small and large. There is also the option to rent a Personal Bag similar to a "locked bag" in another country. Annual fees are payable annually in advance.

Europe

Austria

In Austria, PO Box comes in one size, and four different versions

  1. Only Posts sent to the PO Box will be sent there,
  2. All mail addressed to customer's address and PO Box will be sent to PO Box,
  3. Just like 1., but for business,
  4. Just like 2., but for business, - they are generally available in all post offices across the country.

Only posts from Post Austria can be sent to Postal Post of Austria, but there are also private companies offering the same services, but for example Anonymous or complete packages.

United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, anyone who requests for the Royal Mail Mailbox should create documentation to verify their home or business address.

North America

In Canada, Postbox is available in five different sizes (A, B, C, D & amp; E). They are generally available in all post offices across the country.

In the United States, PO Boxes are generally available through the United States Postal Service (USPS). They are available in five different sizes. They are usually set from the smallest box at the top to the largest box at the bottom. The two largest sizes can be configured as a drawer. To rent a PO Box, two different forms of identification are required. At least one of them must be a valid photo ID. As part of an agreement to rent a PO Box, if a PO Box is used for business, the Post Office will provide, upon request, a business (geographical) address.

Street Addressing

Until 2012, only items sent or shipped via USPS are acceptable on the USPS PO Box. However, a service called Street Addressing has started to change this. After the permission form is filled in by the box holder, the Street Address allows private senders, such as United Parcel Service (UPS) or FedEx, to send items to modify the actual street address of the Post Office where the PO Box is located. The Post Office receives the item, and places it in a PO Box or, for a larger item, handles it in the same way as a package sent via USPS. (Some have storage lockers.) Only certain Post Offices offer Road Addressing, and even for that to do so, it may not be available to all its PO Box customers (eg, Box at no cost). Other restrictions also exist, including the same restrictions on items that can not be sent via USPS. In many cases, the package may require an additional business day for delivery, and the service is never intended for overnight delivery from private senders. If an item is sent using Street Addressing where the box holder does not register correctly, it will be returned to the sender.

Street Address will have the same street address from the post office, plus "unit number" matching P.O. Box number. For example, in El Centro, California, the post office is located at 1598 Main Street. Therefore, for P.O. Box 9975 (fictitious), Street Address is: 1598 Main Street Unit 9975, El Centro, CA. Nationally, the first five digits of the zip code may or may not be the same as P.O. The address box, and the last four digits (Zip 4) are almost always different. Except for some of the largest post offices in the US, 'Street Address' (not a Postcard address) nine Zip 4 numbers are the same for all the boxes in a particular location.
