Team

Twenty teams competed in the league - seventeen top teams from the previous season, as well as three teams promoted from the Championship.

Burnley became the first club to be promoted after a 1-0 win against Queens Park Rangers on 2 May 2016 meant they secured an automatic spot. They returned to the league after missing a season. Middlesbrough became the second club to be promoted, after a 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion means they finished above them on goal difference and secured a second automatic spot. They play Premier League football for the first time since the 2008-09 season. Hull City became the third and final promoted club, following a 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship play-off final at Wembley Stadium on May 28, 2016, to secure their comeback to the Premier League after just one season.

The three clubs were promoted to replace Newcastle United, Norwich City and Aston Villa. This is the first season in the Premier League era that former European Cup winners Aston Villa did not compete in the top flight of English football.

Stadia and location

West Ham United played for the first time at the London Stadium, formerly known as the Olympic Stadium. Despite having 60,010 capacity, for the first Premier League match was limited to 57,000 due to security concerns following persistent standing by fans in West Ham's Europa League game played in early August.

Stoke City announced that from the 2016-17 season, the Britannia Stadium will be renamed to bet365 Stadium.

Tottenham Hotspur plays at White Hart Lane with reduced capacity, as the northeast corner of the stadium is being dismantled to help facilitate building work for their new stadium being built side by side.
