Usage

Flyer may be used by individuals, businesses, nonprofits or governments to:

  • Advertise events like music concerts, nightclub performances, festivals, or political rallies
  • Promote a business selling goods such as discount stores for used cars or business services such as restaurants or massage parlors.
  • Persuade people about social, religious or political messages, such as in evangelism or political campaign activities on behalf of political parties or candidates during the election. Leaflets have been used in armed conflict: for example, air flyer propaganda has become a psychological warfare tactic.
  • Recruit members for organizations or companies.

Like postcards, pamphlets, and small posters, leaflets are a low-cost form of marketing or mass communication. There are many different flyer formats. Some examples include:

  • A4 (approximately letterhead size)
  • A5 (roughly half the size of letterhead)
  • DL (complete slip size)
  • A6 (postcard size)

Leaflets are not expensive to produce and they only require basic printing machines from the 18th century to the 20th century. Its widespread use intensified in the 1990s with the deployment of a cheaper desktop publishing system. In 2010, cheap black and white leaflets can be produced only with personal computers and computer printers. In 2010, ordering leaflets through traditional printing services has been replaced by Internet services. Customers submit designs, review evidence online or via email and receive end products by mail.

Leaflets are not a new medium: before the American War of Independence, some colonies were angry with the Stamp Act (1765) and gathered together in congresses and anti-cap meetings. In this congress they must win support, and issue leaflets and leaflets, pamphlets, along with other written equipment, to do so.

In the 2000s, some jurisdictions have laws or regulations that prohibit or restrict leafleting or flyering in certain locations. The owner of a private property may put up signs that say "Post No Bills"; this occurs mainly on wooden fences around building sites or vacant lots.

Distribution and use

Leaflets distributed on the street (a practice known as "flyering" or "leafleting"), distributed door-to-door by mail, posted on bulletin boards, placed under windshield wipers, provided at events or on streets, or affixed to telephone poles, walls, or other surfaces. Bulletin boards are found on campuses, in cafes, community gatherings, laundries, and small markets. Inexpensive to produce, contemporary leaflets are often produced in glossy cards 300 g/m 2 , while leaflets may be produced at 130 g/m 2 -170 g/m 2 heavy paper and can be a very effective form of direct marketing.

In 2010, some individuals and organizations send flyers by e-mail, tactics that avoid spending money on paper, printing and sending or hiring people to post leaflets on telephone poles or distribute them. The electronic brochure can be embedded into the body of the email or added as an attachment to be opened.
