JMP (pronounced "jump") is a series of computer programs for statistical analysis developed by the JMP SAS Institute business unit. It was launched in 1989 to take advantage of the graphical user interface introduced by the Macintosh. Since then it has been rewritten significantly and is available for the Windows operating system. JMP is used in applications such as Six Sigma, quality control, and engineering, experimental design, as well as for science, engineering, and social science research.

The software can be purchased in five configurations: JMP, JMP Pro, JMP Clinical, JMP Genomics and JMP Graph Builder App for iPad. JMP can be automated with its scripting language, JSL. The software is focused on visual analytics exploration, where users investigate and explore data. This exploration can also be verified by testing hypotheses, data mining, or other analytical methods. In addition, discoveries made through graphical exploration can lead to a designed experiment that can be designed and analyzed with JMP.

Histori

JMP was developed in the mid to late 1980s by John Sall and the development team to utilize the graphical user interface introduced by Apple Macintosh. It originally stood for "John Macintosh Project" and was first released in October 1989. It is mostly used by scientists and engineers for experimental design (DOE), quality and productivity support (Six Sigma), and reliability modeling. Semiconductor manufacturers also include early adopters of JMP.

Interactive graphics and other features were added in 1991 with version 2.0. Version 2 is twice the size of the original, though it is still sent on a floppy disk. It takes 2 MB of memory and comes with 700 pages of documentation. Support for Microsoft Windows was added with version 3.1 in 1994. Rewritten with Version 4 and released in 2002, JMP can import data from a wider variety of data sources and add support for surface plots. Version 4 also adds new time forecasting and smoothing models, such as seasonal smoothing methods, called Winter Methods, and ARIMA (Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average). It is also the first version to support JSL, JMP Scripting Language.

In 2005, data mining tools such as decision trees and neural networks were added with version 5 as well as Linux support, which was later recalled in JMP 9. Then in 2005, JMP 6 was introduced. JMP began integrating with SAS in version 7.0 in 2007 and has strengthened this integration ever since. Users can write SAS code in JMP, connect to SAS server, and retrieve and use data from SAS. Support for bubble plots is added in version 7. JMP 7 also improves data visualization and diagnostics.

JMP 8 was released in 2009 with new drag-and-drop and 64-bit features to take advantage of advancements in the Mac operating system. It also adds new user interfaces to build graphs, tools for selected experiments and support for Life Distribution. According to Scientific Computing , this software has improvements in "graphics, QA, ease of use, SAS integration and data management areas." JMP 9 in 2010 added a new interface to use the R programming language of JMP and add-ins for Excel. The main screen is rebuilt and refinements are made for new Degradation simulations, graphs and platforms. In March 2012, version 10 made improvements in data mining, predictive analysis, and automated modeling.

Version 11 was released in late 2014. It includes new, easy-to-use features, Excel import wizard, and advanced features for experimental design. Two years later, version 12.0 was introduced. According to Scientific Computing , it adds new submenu "Utility Modeling" tools, improved performance and new technical features for statistical analysis. Version 13.0 was released in September 2016 and introduced numerous improvements for reporting, ease of use and handling of large data sets in memory.

Software

JMP consists of JMP, JMP Pro, JMP Clinical and JMP Genomics, and iPad Graph Builder App. JMP Clinical and JMP Genomics combine JMP with SAS software.

JMP software is partially focused on the analysis and visualization of exploratory data. It is designed for the user to investigate the data to learn something unexpected, as opposed to confirming the hypothesis. JMP connects statistical data to graphs that represent them, so users can browse or browse data and their various visual representations. The main application is to design experiments and analyze statistical data from industrial processes.

JMP is a desktop application with wizard-based user interface, while SAS can be installed on the server. It runs in memory, not on disk storage. According to a review in Pharmaceutical Statistics, JMP is often used as a graphical front end for the SAS system, which performs statistical analysis and tabulation. JMP Genomics, used to analyze and visualize genomic data, requires SAS components to operate and can access SAS/Genetics and SAS/STAT procedures or enable SAS macros. JMP Clinical, used to analyze clinical test data, can package SAS code in JSL scripting language and convert SAS code to JMP.

JMP is also the name of the SAS Institute's business unit developing JMP. In 2011 it has 180 employees and 250,000 users.

The JMP Scripting Language (JSL) is a language that is interpreted to create analytic results and to automate or extend the functionality of JMP software. JSL was first introduced in JMP version 4 in 2000. JSL has a LISP-like syntax, which is structured as a series of expressions. All programming elements, including if-then statements and loops, are implemented as JSL functions. Data tables, display elements and analysis are represented by objects in JSL being manipulated with named messages. Users can write JSL scripts to perform analysis and visualizations that are not available in the point-and-click interface or to automate a series of commands, such as weekly reports. The SAS, R, and Matlab codes can also be run using JSL.

Important apps

In 2007, a wildlife monitoring organization, WildTrack, began using JMP with Footprint Identification technology (FIT) to identify animals that were threatened with extinction by their footprints. In 2009, the Chicago Botanic Garden used JMP to analyze DNA data from a tropical breadfruit. The researchers determined that the seedless and starchy fruit was created by the deliberate hybridization of two fruits, flour and dugdug. Herzenberg Laboratory at Stanford has integrated JMP with Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorter (FACS). The FACS system is used to study HIV, cancer, stem cells and oceanography.
