The Interurban multiple units (IMU) are the class of several electric units produced by Walkers Limited/Downer EDI Rail, Maryborough for the Queensland Railway Citytrain division between 1996 and 2011. The IMU is divided into three subclasses, -110 as series 100 , setting 121-124 as 120 series , and setting 161-188, as 160 series . IMU mainly operates services on the Gold Coast and Airport lines, as well as some services on the Sunshine Coast line and rush hour in the suburbs.

Design

The Multiple Unit Interurban is essentially a three-wagon long-distance version of the Suburban Multiple Units. Internally, IMUs are different from SMU, which is equipped with larger seats, luggage racks and mobility access toilets. Like most trains in the Citytrain fleet, two three IMU cars can be combined to form a set of six cars.

History

100 series

To provide rolling supplies for the new Gold Coast line to Helensvale, in 1993 a contract for four 100 sets of classes was awarded to Walkers Limited, Maryborough. Both 100 are produced by Walkers Limited, Maryborough in partnership with ABB. The first four IMU100s, 101 to 104 entered service in 1996 prior to the opening of the new lane. Since this would not be enough to operate all the services on the phone, in July 1995, six more were ordered. They were delivered in 1997. They have luggage racks, disabled access toilets, and high-backed seating.

120 series

In 1999 four 120 series sets were ordered for the Airtrain line to Brisbane Airport.

It is fitted with a seat with a high backrest with a head cushion, one toilet per unit and a luggage rack in different configurations. Series 100 and 120 series can be operated, and used to operate together in revenue service as a six-car device, but this is discontinued.

The 120 series is produced by Walkers Limited, Maryborough in partnership with ADtranz.

IMU120 entered service in 2002.

160 series

In 2004, Queensland Rail ordered sixteen sets of 160 series to provide additional rolling stock in connection with the increase and duplication of the Gold Coast line. Series 160 is produced by Downer EDI Rail, Maryborough in partnership with Bombardier Transportation. The train is identical in design with the Transperth B-series train, with changes to the headlights to complement with the rest of the Citytrain fleet. This train can be operated with 260 series Suburban Multiple Units because both have outboard brake discs and doors operated with plugs.

In early 2007 during security checks, it was found that the air conditioning unit on the 10 millimeter train was too wide for the loading gauge.

On May 28, 2007, the first of the new IMUs entered service on the Gold Coast line.
