1984-1997: Beginning of career
In 1984, C.K. in 17 directs the short comedy film Trish Day. The New York University Tisch School of the Arts showed interest in filmmaking, but instead decided to pursue a career in stand-up comedy. C.K.'s first effort to stand was in 1985 on an open mic night at a comedy club in Boston, Massachusetts, during the peak of a comedy blast. He was given five minutes, but only had two minutes of material. He was so desperate by the experience he had not done for two years. He and Marc Maron later recalled their early careers and friendships in Maron WTF Podcast . 1998-2004: Focus on filming
In 1998, C.K. wrote and directed an independent black-and-white film Tomorrow Night, premiering in Sundance, marking the debut of his feature film director after making several short films, including six short films for sketch show Howie Mandel's Sunny Skies (1995) on Showtime cable network. C.K. self-released Tomorrow Night in 2014. He hosted the PBS show Shortcuts in 1999, featuring independent short films, including some made by C.K. self. Also that year, C.K. designed and starred The Pitth Stupid Talent Show , a special television special talent show. She had an early acting role in an independent comedy Tuna , along with Nick Offerman, in 2000 and appeared on the stand-up showcase series Comedy Central Presents the following year.
C.K. wrote and directed the feature film Pootie Tang (2001), adapted from the sketches featured on The Chris Rock Show and featuring Chris Rock in supporting roles. The film received negative reviews from critics, but has become a cult classic; In a half-star review, Roger Ebert declared it a "train wreck" and felt the film was "not in a detachable condition".
