Monk CafÃÆ' à © is a fictitious coffee shop from NBC's sitcom Seinfeld .
The outside of Tom's Restaurant on the corner of West 112th Street and Broadway, near Columbia University, is often featured on the show as the Monk exterior, although the interior is shot on the sound stage. The restaurant consists of a number of booths, tables and tables. Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer usually sit in the first or second booth from the entrance.
The owner of a fictional cafe is Larry the Cook, played by Lawrence Mandley. He first appeared in "The Outing" during season 4. In season 4 finale, "The Pilot", Elaine is angry that Monk's "new management" does not employ anything but a big waiter. The new owner is identified as Mr. Visaki (played by Al Ruscio) and well-blessed employees turned out to be his daughters. However, in the season 5 episode, "The Wife", Larry has returned as the owner/manager and appears in that role for the rest of the show.
Monk's cashier name is Ruth Cohen, sharing her name with the actress who plays herself. "Ruthie" appears in 101 of episodes of 180 Seinfeld the most characters apart from the four leads; in most appearances, it appears as a background character that does not speak.
Jerry refers to a competing coffee shop, Reggie, as a "bizarro coffee shop." According to George, it has a similar menu but is disliked by Jerry and Elaine (in "The Soup") because of his failure to present the famous "egg white dadar" or "big salad". In "The Pool Guy" George eats at Reggie because there is no place for him on the table at Monk's, with Susan taking fourth place.
Jerry Seinfeld and writer Larry David, who created Seinfeld, called the Monk coffee shop because there was a large pianist poster of Thelonious Monk in the office where they wrote, and they just needed a name.. In the original pilot "The Seinfeld Chronicles," the lunch was known as Pete, and featured a waiter named Claire (played by Lee Garlington); Claire was originally conceived as a regular for the show but was written out (and Pete was replaced by Monk) by the time the show went into the series.
