The Sliding Door is a 1998 British-American romantic drama film written and directed by Peter Howitt and starring Gwyneth Paltrow and John Hannah, while also featuring John Lynch, Jeanne Tripplehorn, and Virginia McKenna. The film alternates between two parallel universes, based on two paths that can be taken by the main character depending on whether he is catching the train, and causing different results in his life.

Plot
Helen Quilley (Gwyneth Paltrow) was fired from her public relations job. As he leaves the office building, he drops the earrings in the elevator and a man picks them up for him. He rushed to train him on the London Underground and missed it. The plot then splits into two story plots, presented as parallel universes, where different events occur, as a result whether he catches a particular train or not.
In the timeline where he took the train, Helen sat with James (John Hannah) (the man in the elevator) in Underground and they started the conversation. He arrives home in time to capture his girlfriend, Gerry (John Lynch), in bed with his ex-girlfriend, Lydia (Jeanne Tripplehorn). Helen throws it away and moves with her friend Anna (Zara Turner), and, at Anna's suggestion, she changes her hairstyle to make a fresh start. James continued by chance to appear in Helen's life, encouraging and encouraging her to start her own public relations firm. In the timeline where Helen missed the train, the next service was postponed; he got out of the station and hailed a cab. A man tried to grab his handbag and wound him, so he went to the hospital. He arrived home after Lydia left and he remained unaware of Gerry's disloyalty. Unable to find another PR job, he took two part-time jobs to pay the bills. Gerry continued to juggle the two women in his life. Lydia, wanting Gerry for herself, made an increasingly aggressive effort to torture Helen and drop hints about their affair with her. Helen suspects Gerry of infidelity but later discovers that she is pregnant. He received a phone call, allegedly for a job interview with an international PR company. He tells Gerry the news but does not manage to tell him about his pregnancy. Lydia summoned Gerry to her apartment, apparently to break up. Thinking about Helen in her interview, Gerry went to see Lydia. While at Lydia, Gerry answers the doorbell and sees Helen standing at the door. Helen was stunned to see Gerry, and Lydia dropped news of her own pregnancy for both. Puzzled, Helen ran and fell off the Lydia stairs.
In both storylines, Helen was taken to the hospital and lost her baby. In the timeline where he originally took the train, he died in the arms of his newfound love, James, right after he said he would make him very happy; at the time line where he missed him, he recovers and tells Gerry to leave for good.
In the last scene (occurring within the "missed train" time line), James leaves the hospital after visiting his mother, and Helen leaves after ending his relationship with Gerry. They meet in the elevator, and Helen drops the earrings that James picks up, as in their first encounter at the beginning of the movie. Before the lift door closed James gave Helen to cheer her up and repeat her phrase: "You know what Monty Python's boy says..." Helen (who previously thought the answer was "always see the bright side of life")) says, "No some expect the Spanish Inquisition. " The frame froze as he and James looked at each other.

Production
The scene at London Underground was filmed at Waterloo subway station in Waterloo & amp; The city line and the Fulham Broadway tube station on the District line. Flat Helen is at Leinster Square. The American Diner is Fatboy's Diner in Trinity Buoy Wharf. The scene by the River Thames was filmed next to the Hammersmith Bridge and at the Blue Anchor pub in Hammersmith. The bridge shown is the Albert Bridge between Battersea and Chelsea. The late-night scene when Paltrow and Hannah walk down the street was filmed at Primrose Gardens (formerly Stanley Gardens) at Belsize Park. The last hospital scene where Helen and James met in the elevator was filmed at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on Fulham Road. The explicit double timeline in the film reflects a similar storyline parting if less emphasized on its 1949 movie predecessor dealing with The Interrupted Journey train crash.

British singer Dido's song "Thank You" made his appearance on the soundtrack, becoming a hit three years later. It was an advertisement for this film that featured "Thank You" as a background music that inspired rapper Eminem to use Dido's voice for his song, "Stan". The song finally hit no. 3 on Billboard chart Hot 100 .
The song Aqua "Turn Back Time" was released as a single in 1998 and topped the UK Singles charts. The music video is heavily based on the movie and shows a scene from it.
The soundtrack is best known as the last of the Paramount movies to be released by MCA Records, which, as the successor of Paramount's previous record division, continues to release the soundtrack for some Paramount films beginning in 1979. In 2003, when Geffen Records absorbed the MCA and became the successor another for the previous record division of Paramount, he began to share the task of removing the Paramount movie soundtrack with Interscope and A & amp; M.

Time Out describes the film as "basically a romantic comedy with a good gimmick". Angie Errigo from Empire magazine gave a 3/5 star movie. Roger Ebert gave the movie a 2/4 star, and criticized the scenario.
Film director Agnieszka Holland considers the film a copy of the failed 1981 Polish film Blind Chance, directed by Krzysztof Kie? Lowski, with all the "philosophical depths and subtleties of the stripped style".
